Bad battery or what?

Recently my laptop, while on battery, which I usually am, has been shutting off on me after a while and the amber light flashes though the battery indicator shows mostly full. I can't start the computer again until I'm plugged in to the power supply. Is the battery going  bad, or does it just need to be reset, or what?

Go to the elevated command prompt.  Enter 'powercfg   /batteryreport'. Then return to the desktop. Open file explorer. Then search for' battery-report.html' in the c:\windows\system32\ sub-folder. Double-click to open it in the browser. Compare design capacity with full charge capacity. Post screenshot of the top portion of report if possible. Jack E/NJ

Open DeviceManager. Click 'batteries' folder. Right click and uninstall each device you find in this folder. The exit DeviceManager without reinstalling anything. Shut down Windows normally. Then turn the machine back on. When the battery charge LED turns from steady orange to steady blue, pull the plug to see what happens. Jack E/NJ

Nothing happened that I can tell. I had reset the battery from the pinhole on the bottom of the laptop and the battery light didn't flash anymore but the computer was still shutting down on battery after a while. It seems to work fine otherwise on power supply. Maybe I just need a new battery?

    >>>the computer was still shutting down on battery after a while>>>

How long is 'after a while'. A minute? An hour? A few hours? This might be due to the battery's internal controller chip failing to tell Windows that it's below the 10% charge level.  However, did you disconnect the charger when you reset the battery? Press and hold the paperclip for at least 30 seconds without the charger plugged in. Jack E/NJ

When it shuts down, it's usually after an hour or two. Yes, when I reset the battery, the charger was not connected. I thought I read somewhere to press and hold the paperclip for at least 5 seconds, but I will do it again for at least 30 seconds, assuming the computer needs to be shut down while doing that?

Absolutely shut it down before inserting the paperclip for 30 seconds. If it shuts down unexpectedly after an hour or two without displaying the Win10 10% warning message, then yes the battery's internal controller is probably messed up. You can try to re-calibrate the battery's controller by following directions on this link. https://www.howtogeek.com/172271/how-to-calibrate-your-laptops-battery-for-accurate-battery-life-estimates/

If it still fails to give the 10% warning and shuts down unexpectedly, then the battery's internal control circuitry is likely damaged.  A new battery would then be advisable but you can probably hobble along with the old battery if you watch the charge level. Once it drops below 6-7%, a sudden shutdown is about to happen.  Google your 'full acer model number' and 'battery' for vendors. Amazon usually has the best prices. Most new ACER laptop batteries are in the $20-30 range.

I've done all of the above, but the laptop still shuts down on battery after about an hour or so with no warning, so the battery has probably seen better days. I'll just replace it. No big deal. Appreciate all the help. I know much more about the battery system now. Thanks!

I ordered a battery. Any special trick to installing it other than after removing bottom cover, unplug and remove old battery, install and plug in new one? Any setting or configurations?

Make sure the bottom cover screws are snug after installing. Because the mainboard may be equipped with a spring loaded normally off safety switch that cuts all power to the mainboard if the bottom cover is misaligned or its screws are loose.  Don't try to turn it on till the charge LED turns from steady orange to steady blue.
