Did your computer have Dolby audio enhancement software till now? If you remember having it in the past, then check if that is running now. It should automatically when the computer starts but sometimes it needs to be manually started up. If you had it, chances are, it came installed with the computer when new. Either find it in the start menu or look for the exe file in C drive. Once you launch it straight from the exe file, its icon should automatically show up in start menu.
This app increases volume level on certain presets like Movie and Game. So if it stopped running, there can be a noticeable drop in volume.

However, this is something that happens after resetting and I haven't heard of this happening from an update. Still, no harm in checking.

Sounds like it was a bug with the update. Good thing you sorted it out yourself. Since 2004 is fairly new, you should wait some more time before updating it again. New major updates usually cause a few problems with some users.
