My wireless adaptor (Qualcomm Atheros QCA93770) doesn't detect 5g unless I change it's preferred band setting to 5G. Even then, the 5G router pops up but when I try to connect, it says 'Can't connect to the network'. However, sometimes randomly, it connects to 5G but then the next time I open it, the same problem occurs. Can someone please help me?

From your description, I think the router  is currently set to 2.4GHz. Unless you are familiar with the method to change the router to 5GHz, it may be simpler to change the QCA93770 preferred band to the 2.4GHz in DeviceManager. Jack E/NJ

the router is dual band. plus I'm connected to 5G with other devices

Yes, it's dual band but not sure if its automatic. If automatic, the router may switch from 2.4 to 5 and back again depending on which device is trying to access it. This might explain the intermittent connection issues. Have you tried to turn of the other devices so that only the qualcomm is trying to access the router? Jack E/NJ

its not possible for me to disconnect every device connected to the router. is there any other way to check if it's automatic? and if it helps, I have some devices connected to 5G while some devices at the same time connected to 2.4G

OK, the router seems automatic and helps explain why the laptop response is intermittent. What is your full ACER laptop model number. We'll then check for a wifi software update or install a fresh copy of the existing software. Jack E/NJ

    A315-5GG. The first G is not a G. It's a number. Perhaps a 6. Please recheck. Jack E/NJ

I found something weird. Whenever I enter a password which has more than 8 characters, it accepts it regardless of it being correct or not. It then 'Checks Network Requirements' and then comes up with the error message 'Can't connect to this network'

What exactly do you mean when you say " I try to connect to 5G "? Can you show a screenshot of what you're clicking on when you "try to connect to 5G"? Jack E/NJ

So why not click on the 2.4GHz? It should be just as fast just a different band. Jack E/NJ

It’s a Huawei product no wonder lol try this: press the F3 key or F3 and Fn keys together on your laptop once you have rebooted your OS into Win-10, this is a procedure of activating the WiFi/BT functions. Because and with WiFi 2.4G and 5G protocols your modem should have both listed in the “Internet Access” part of your taskbar (see caption and example below) if they are both working, your Huawei HG8245W5 modem must have some issues with the 5G part and how its setup or its faulty? As both Ethernet and WiFi/BT’s are very reliable and very rarely go wrong. This is a Huawei HG8245W5 modem problem and has nothing to do with your Atheros QCA9377 card.

Btw, and just to make sure, check the Atheros QCA9377 cards black/white antenna wires inside your laptop and if a either wires has not come lose or the card could be faulty? Which is a very unlikely thing, as these cards are very reliable and they very rarely go wrong. Good luck.

There is a major difference between 2.4 and 5G. 2.4 is 40 mbps and 5G is 300 mbps. At least for me.

@StevenGen Ok I'll try and get those things checked. Yeah it could be a modem issue as the 5G doesn't regularly come up in the 'Internet Access'.

The signal strength is high for both bands so the antenna connections and wifi card seem to be in good shape. I agree with @StevenGen on the issue may be  with the Huawei router and/or one or more of the other devices.  Can you possibly temporarily disconnect one of the other devices  then test the 5GHz connection. Then do the same test with another device. Then another until you've tried them all. I think it's also possible the router might not be able handle all the 5GHz devices for some reason. Jack E/NJ

  • Does the same problem occur when you change the channel to 36 on the router?
