Swift - USB power-off port does not recognise devices, only works as a power point

Hi,
I've purchased an Acer Swift 5 Core i7 8GB 512GB SSD Win10 Home Laptop (NX.H7KEK.003) from Ebuyer. The laptop has 1 usable standard USB port. The USB power-off charge port works for charging only, if I swap the mouse or keyboard over from the standard USB port to the charge port, I get an error about device not recognised. How can I configure the USB power-off charge port as a standard USB port?

I don't really care about the ability to charge via USB off a laptop, I'd much rather have the ability to plug an additional USB peripheral in.
Thanks

  • What is the exact model of the notebook? Example an515-51-75kz. Have you tested resetting the battery?
Also, are there any drivers with problems in the device manager?

The previous owner might have zapped that port... Power and data are on different circuits.

    Hi,
It's n17w3 (sf514-53T). The laptop is brand new and there are no unknown devices in device manager. I've performed the battery disconnect as described, but it still recognise USB devices.
    Is this normal?
    Thanks

No, it's not normal at all. If you have done the full battery rest, including the wait times between steps, and it didn't fix it then it's likely not just a confused configuration. Try going into the BIOS and setting everything to the factory defaults (F9 then F10 to save and exit). That port is first and foremost a USB port, and the only weird thing about it is that it keeps on providing charge current when the rest of the system is shut down. At least until your battery drops below threshold. :) If none of these things we've suggested allows you to plug a normal USB device into that port then it's time to either swap the machine out with the vendor (if it's been little enough time) or contact Acer support so they can repair it for you.

4 days I emailed pop.request@aceruk.com for a warranty return as instructed with fault details and serial details, but so far no reply. So far the service has been poor, I can see why I don't come across Acer devices in many UK workplaces...

Have you contacted them through the website for Acer UK? I expect they are understaffed during the pandemic, but they should get back to you.
