My Acer R13 CB5-312T is out of warranty.  The internal microphone has quit working.  When I plug an external microphone to it, it is recognized in the settings, but no sound comes through.  The speakers work fine and the camera works fine.  I purchased a replacement I/O audio board.  I have repaired a laptop before (several years ago) but have not done a repair on a Chromebook.  Any help/guides would be greatly appreciated.

I don't believe the audio board is what you are looking for. The microphone is part of the camera module. Unless the wiring between the camera module and the audio board is bad you are more likely to need the camera. The audio board has the headphone jack and the speakers connected to it, then has a ribbon cable over to the MB. The camera module wiring comes down from the top with the display wires.

The reason I think it is the audio board is because an external microphone does not work, either.  If it was just the microphone itself, then an external one should work.  But since an external one does not work, I am thinking the audio i/o.   It is frustrating because an external microphone is a solution if a microphone goes bad but not in this case.
