Hello,

I would like to connect two external monitors to my laptop. Lpatop has one hdmi port -> so one hdmi to one monitor is fine.
I bought HDMI splitter and my intention was that I can connect two exteranl monitors to my laptop with extended display.
However it looks like only one of the monitors is detected.
the other shows out of range when I connect all of them to the splitter.

Can you please advise if there is a way to connect both monitors to extend the display of the laptop?

Regards,
Ivaylo

You won't be able to do it with the HDMI, there is only one signal on that. To connect a second external monitor you want to use a USB dock that provides the extra signal. You have two ports that can work, either the USB 3 (blue) port or the USB-C port. The USB-C is gen 1 so you can't connect directly in DP mode, but any of the docks should work fine.

thank you billsey, when you say one signal - does it mean all HDMI has only one signal? I thought that signal will be spread through the other monitors. when you said I have two ports that can work, I am not sure that I clearly understand you. Do you mean that I can connect the USB docking station to those two ports or you mean something else ?

HDMI typically has one video signal on it, it wasn't until HDMI 2.0 that two channels were even supported, and very few implementation are out there, people would rather use the extra bandwidth to drive a single channel faster than 60Hz. What a properly design HDMI splitter does is give you the same signal on two monitors, useful for something like classroom use where the teacher sees the image on a small display and the class sees it on a big one.
Your laptop has one HDMI port that allows you to connect a second display. To connect a third display you need a dock that comes off your USB to create an HDMI signal to send to the third monitor. As long as you are not trying to play games on the third monitor you should find it works nicely. Games would have slow refresh rates due to the bandwidth of the USB port. The docking station will connect to one of your USB ports, and it can be either the USB 3.0 port or the USB-C port.
