The system has an existing 4 gb memory chip that I want to replace,  I have two 8 gb memory chips to install replace it.  When I replace the existing chip with these only one of the 8gb ships becomes active.  The second slot does not activate.  As a test I put the original 4gb chips into the second slot.  It chip does not show up on the memory either.  So I have to assume that the second memory slot it not active.  Is there any way to turn this slot on or activate it?

Firstly, the Aspire E5-521-26EM can take a max mem ram of 16GB and has 2x slots with (2x banks of 1) and comes with OEM mem ram of 4GB removable. Its also compatible with storage type drive interface of SATA 3 - 6Gb/s ssd’s.

Please send us a caption of your CPUz “Memory” with both 8GB ram installed as the ram should work in either 2x same brand ram and/or with 2x none compatible ram also, give us a caption of the “SPD” so we can see the specs of the 2x 8GB ram that you have installed and/or tell us what the 2x 8GB ram brand and model it is? I would try and match the new ram to the same as the Aspire E5-521-26EM OEM’s brand and spec 4GB ram as the Aspire E5-521-26EM takes DDR3L-1600 SODIMM to even DDR3L-1866 SODIMM type ram.

Note: as far as “Crucial Ram” is concerned, they recommend their Crucial 16GB Kit (2 x 8GB) DDR3L-1600 SODIMM which should work with your Aspire E5-521-26EM in dual channel. Btw, I’ve got an Aspire V3-571G and it works 100% and perfectly with same branded and spec 2x 4GB DDR3L-1866 SODIMM type ram in “Channel # - Dual” and its lighting fast and I’ve had no problems with this ram at all for over 3 years!

Aaaaaand this guide may help you understand a bit of what's going on: https://community.acer.com/en/discussion/608352/guide-how-to-find-out-if-you-can-upgrade-the-ram-and-which-one-you-need

If I were to hazard a guess, I'd say it's not that the secondary slot is inactive, but that both those chips are incompatible.

Thank you for the information and suggestions.  After rigorous effort and many hours of gnashing of teeth I discovered the problem.  The ***** that ordered the memory order 2 4gb chips instead of 2 8gb chips.  Of course you can guess that I am the ***** :s .   I certainly learned how to take the Acer apart and put it back together, almost like I know what I am doing.

    Thanks again for the suggestions.

Don't be so hard on yourself, it happens, we've all done things that in retrospect make us look dumb af.

Check if the seller allows you to replace it by a bigger set; you'll have to pay more so chances are he'll agree, but it depends.
