I wanted to try and do a clean install of windows pro on my w510 but I can't find any device drivers. Where can I find them?

I'm planning to setup some dual boot capability from SD cards, the W510 is said to be capable. Instead of a clean install, why not try one of them first ?

As far as drivers, the only really new thing is the cloverleaf Z2760 but to software it looks pretty much like an Atom. BTW despte the advts, the W510 is running 32 bit Win 8  because the 64 bit does not support connected standby (low power mode) to receive messages.

My first trial will probably be Win 7-64 & then Fedora 18. microSD cards are getting really cheap.

My suggestion would be to just do a clean install and see what drivers Windows finds on its own then ask for specific ones once you know what is missing.

Perhaps we need a forum section for more serious playing ?

According to ark.intel.com that chip doesn't support 64 bit.  I haven't tried to boot from a 64 bit OS yet.  I've loaded 32 bit Windows 8 Enterprise a few times now.

FYI, I can't get it to do a standard 'install' to an SD card, even with the drivers.  It shows up in diskpart as removable media, so I suspect that's why the install doesn't show it.  I'm suspecting it won't be super easy to make it run from an SD card (maybe with the windows-to-go setup, but that's not easy to do in an UEFI environment as you can't boot from NTFS, so you need two partitions, and diskpart doesn't like creating two partitions on removable media)

I started having issues with conectivity after doing a upgrade to windows 8 pro with media center. The fool that I was I tried to do a system restore but kept getting an error that there were missing files and to please insert media. I used a usb drive wiith windows 8 pro as the media but it didn't work out very well. I now have windows 8 pro back on it but I have no support for any devices and the touch screen is not responsive. My next step is to use a powered usb hub on the one onboard usb connection to try and get key board, mouse and dvd support working. Also, I tried to use acer chat support when this whole thing started and that was a wate of time. I was told that the issue was with the upgrade and I should call ms for help and there were no drivers for download and I could not access the drivers on the dvd unless I did a restore using the acer media. Not a good solution for me since I like a nice clean os to play with. I do like your idea of multiboot on sd card but I also wonder if VMs could run on this thing like it did in 7. Windows xp mode was a fun sandbox.

You should have created the drivers cd/usb drive using the Acer Recovery software prior to upgrading.  I've done that, it's about 1GB of data.

Actually, I just checked, and the drivers themselves are only about 130MB, compressed less than 50MB.

The other software from that 1GB was all of the acer stuff, acer cloud, clear.fi stuff, etc.

Oh and you will need an external keyboard/mouse.  Install the Intel Platform Drivers first, that will get your keyboard and touchscreen going.

How were you able to boot from a flash drive? I've tried using both a USB flash drive and a USB dvd-rom. I've used the microsoft tool to make the flashdrive bootable, used original microsoft bootable discs in the dvd-rom, and tested them both on other pc's to make sure they work. Set the boot order in the bios to cd or usb first, whichever I was trying, and nothing has worked at all. Not once. It just ignores my usb devices and boots to windows.

My whole goal is to figure out a way to image this thing with Windows Deployment Services over the lan, but I'll take just booting from something for now lol. I need Win8 Pro so I can join this little guy to our domain!

Note that the "voice of Acer" has not chimed in, I suspect someone made a major boo-boo in the BIOS firmware and hopefully there will be a firmware update.

See my "Secure Boot" post. For thems what do not know, "Secure Boot" is part of the Microsoft UEFI. If you listen to Microsoft, it is to prevent root kits. Linux people say it is to prevent machines from booting Linux.

In brief what "Secure Boot" does it to intercept the boot process and if the device (CD-ROM, Flash Drive) does not have the proper certificate (issued by Microsoft but I have not yet found a list of what has certs), then the boot process skips to the next device.

It is a bit disconcerting to select "boot from CD" then have it spin up slow down and boot Windows. If you look in the BIOS page where you select the boot order, "Secure Boot" is marked enabled with no way that I have found to turn it off.

This is in violation of Microsoft's directive that the system owner be able to switch it off (they want to avoid monopoly court) so if there is really no way then Acer is in violation and could lose threir right to the "Windows 8" sticker on the back.

Hope Acer responds quickly because I know people in low places and the level of bad press this could get is unimaginable but since I have several Acer products (two computers and a monitor) at the moment would prefer to work with them rather than against (and yes Virginia, I have done BIOS programming in the past. No big.)

Bottom line: Unless you boot from a special signed drive, Secure Boot will block it. A quick look indicates that Ubuntu 12, Fedora 18, and various Microsoft products have the proper certs. What it takes to make a bootable drive with one of these is something I am just starting to look into.

ps the W510 User Guide on page 83 (85th page in English section of the .pdf) has two short paragraphs on the BIOS and how to display it. There is no mention of Secure Boot.

pps if the earlier poster made it work I suspect it was booting Windows 8 from a recovery generated image that has the certificates attached or from a Microsoft instalation disk with same-same.

ppps this is quite a learning curve. Did verify that the Intel Atom Z2760 is 32 bit only and the W500 used a 64 bit AMD chip. Is odd since one of my Acer Netbooks has an N450 that runs Win7-64 hapilly but suspect the power draw may have been lower.

    Have some good news!

Our CDW rep was able to get ahold of an Acer tech, told us how to get around the secure boot:

    1. Go into BIOS Security page and set a Supervisor Password.
    2. Go to the BIOS Boot page and disable Secure Boot.
    3. Go to the Exit page and select Exit Saving Changes.

    AND IT WORKED!

I had to use a powered usb hub, then it would see my usb dvd-rom, keyboard, and mouse. Hit F12 at boot (enable that in the bios also) and viola! My dvd-rom showed up as a bootable device.

I'm installing Win8 Enterprise as we speak!

    Good luck!

Interesting. I receved the same information from TS, set the admin password, disbled secure boot and enabled F12 then went to the boot menu to the boot menu but despite spinning up and down on a bootable disk (Microsoft even) there was no CD selection in the boot menu. Can read disk fine one Windows loads. WT...

It didn't work the first time i tried it either, it seemed to work best if you really jam on the F12 key as soon as the screen comes on with the Acer logo and don't stop till the boot menu appears. It took a good maybe 10 seconds before it came up. I'm actually typing on the new installed Windows now Smiley Happy

    Hi,

Just want to add to this post that there is a Windows 8 driver pack available from the Acer Support Site.

Thanks.  I downloaded it and installed it.

It updates a bunch of firmwares.  The trackpad is better but still bad.  Much more sensitive now, things move faster, but the erratic movements are still there, just not as frequent.  Still get backwards movements sometimes when trying to move in a horizontal direction.  Using two fingers (one to click down, then dragging a window) is impossible on this trackpad.

I've just come to the conclusion that this trackpad is horrible.

Still no multitouch it appears.  I can't two-finger scroll on the start screen.

    Hello Acer Community,

I would like to update in regards to the Touchpad for W510. The issue has been resolved we have found a hardware update to the touchpad module will need to be applied. Please contact your local service support to arrange this.

Contact numbers are available by going to your local Acer Support web page.

    Thanks
