Acer Aspire M5 Series, Z09
Problem:  After HD replacement, the computer no longer starts or runs on battery. The battery was 100% working before HD replacement.  Power adapter boots laptop fine.

I just replaced my original platter hard drive with a WD 500GB solid-state drive.  Now, my laptop will no longer start on the battery after HD replacement.  It started on battery fine before HD upgrade.  It still starts on power adapter with no issue and shows 100% battery charge when in windows 10.  If the power adapter is unplugged and I press the power button, nothing happens.  If I unplug the power adapter when in windows, the laptop immediately turns off.

All this seems to indicated that the battery is not connected properly.  I am hoping to identify what physical connections to check or what to do to reconnect the battery properly.

Tests
1) If I disconnect the internal battery, windows shows no battery connected.  So windows appear to be seeing when the battery is connected and reports a 100% charge.
2) The battery charge light is blue when the power adapter is plugged in and the battery is connected.  I believe this indicates charging or full charge.
3) I tried to reset the battery pinhole for 30 seconds
4) I tried holding the power button for 30 seconds to discharge the device
5) All of the cables seem to be re-connected well and I see no obvious burn marks or issues.

I have not reconnected the keyboard, I am using a remote keyboard, but I do not think to reconnect the keyboard will affect the battery issues, plus it's a major pain to put the keyboard back on if I still need to troubleshoot.

That is spot on to assume as you have no other choice, its not rocket science lol that "I will assume that it is dead and cannot hold enough of a charge or generate enough volts to start the computer" as changing to an ssd that requires less power than a spinner hdd has no bearing on a battery not being able to start a computer, get a new battery as they are only about USD $17.00 and try that.

Hi. Thank you for your response. I appreciate it.

My laptop is the Acer Aspire M5 Series, Z09.  Let me know if there is a way to get more detail on the model number.
It has an Intel Core i5-3317U 1.7GHz, 6 GB memory, 10 point touch-screen, and had a 500gb spindle hard drive.
I do not see any buttons similar to that on this motherboard.  I posted a high-resolution image of the complete motherboard, which should be zoomable, if you wish to double-check.  I went over the whole board with a flashlight and do not see a button or switch.

Here is the manufacturer stickers.  I do not see reference to a series number, besides Z09.

  • Are you sure that this plug is connected correctly?

Yes.  It is seated properly and has the red wires to the left and black to the right.  I also reseated it a few times to be sure.  With this connection unplugged, Windows reports the battery is missing. With it plugged in, Window reports the battery is present and charged 100%.

To me it seems that your battery is faulty and needs replacing or there is either a lose connection (like colleague egydiocoelho is showing) as there is no magic pill with battery issues, the battery (if it is 100% and functional?) should change and work without the charger pugged in. One of my laptops that I use is a V3-571G (which is an older Gen 3 and similar to your Aspire M5 Series, Z09) with the i7-3610QM cpu but its got a removable battery and this laptop had the same problems from a brownout power surge and the battery and PS got damaged, the battery seemed ok when connected to the charger but just on battery it would die, hence I replaced both battery and PS and all worked 100%, try that as I’m sure that is your problem, as adding an SSD (which I have done to this V3-571G) had no impact on battery performance (as a matter of a fact it improved it) and what is happening to you should not happen.

I have a multimeter.  Which pins would I use to check the battery?  There are 3 red, 4 greens, and 3 blacks. When I put the red probe on the red wires and the black probe on the black wireless, I get no reading.  But, when I put the red probe on the 1st green wire and the black probe on any of the black wires, I get 2.505 v

The battery says it is 11.1V battery.  I would expect to get a reading of near 11.1V

This would indicate to me that the battery is bad (if I am reading these right). But, it was working fine before the hard drive replacement.  I unplugged the battery during the replacement (With he plug you pointed out) to ensure no electricity was in the system. My reading could be bad as well, as I am not sure I am doing it correctly.  I would expect the volts to come from the red wire, not the green.

Also of note, I have left the laptop on the power adapter overnight and many times today, so the battery has had every opportunity to charge.  The battery shows a full charge light on the laptop and in Windows.  Is it possible the battery went bad during the hard drive change and is showing full in windows and the laptop light, but is actually dead and not charging?

    Thank you,

    T

Interesting battery command Link.  Found this dos command to check your battery health. It believes my battery is active and healthy.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8C0MKaIR-EE

I also found a free battery program.
    Batterycare.net

Both of these show my battery is detectable and working, but I can see its is near death.
Batterycare shows my battery's designed capacity was 55500Mwh.  The total capacity is now 12954mWh.  Which is a wear level of 76.66%.  So it is definitely on the way out.  The windows command shows me that windows is communicating with my battery and sees it is active. It also gave me similar info to batterycare.  Here is the report the windows 10 command gave me.
    https://filebin.net/81ka4jhkiiphqctg/battery-report.html?t=t85rw3y9

So, I remain confused as to why it will not power up my computer.  But, at the moment, I will assume that it is dead and cannot hold enough of a charge or generate enough volts to start the computer.  Does that sound like a reasonable assumption?

Thanks all.  I do appreciate you helping me sort through this.

Lol.  Well, actually this is a friend's laptop.  So, I have to let them know why the battery was working when I took it, and not when I returned it.  But hey, the hard drive wasn't working when I took it, so..... lol.  Thanks for all the help guys.  I really appreciate the efforts.  I think we have adequate info to move onto StevenGen's suggestion of replacing the battery.  I was also hoping to get it working before I have to close up the keyboard, hate that part.  Thanks all!

Well. I gave up on fixing the battery, put everything back together, tested it... and..... it still didn't work. lol.
But... I left it unplugged on the table last night.  Today it booted right up on the battery.  So, who knows.  Could it be that the battery was so afraid of me, it came back from the dead?

Thanks again all.  I was able to further my troubleshooting knowledge a bit.

  • Or maybe some problem with static energy?
