So my dad has a 5740 which he uses just to check emails really no reason to buy a new computer it works fine but it’s starting to become slow as the hdd is 11 years old (I’m surprised it’s lasted this long) I cloned his hdd in my computer and booted into the ssd everything works.. I put it into the 5740 it shows in bios but won’t boot (operating system not found...) I obviously tried updating bios from 1.09 to 1.28 which I did successfully nothing changed... (note: I did not install the bios updates in order I skipped to latest idk if on old machines that matters) I also noticed in the bootable drives section of the very small bios that it says “ide” next to the ssd instead of “ahci” so maybe that’s the problem? And I can’t physically change it to force ahci mode... any help would be appreciated..

Show us a caption of the "Boot" and the "Main" sections of the 5740's BIOS like the captions below, which is from an Aspire 5750 bios with a Samung SSD and the SSD was cloned as a 1st boot whcich I did from an MBR Legacy HDD like from your fathers 5740 HDD.

You must have cloned the new SSD from your system that is a UEFI and not an MBR Legacy type that the 5740 needs, as it wont work with a UEFI cloned Windows-10, its got to be an MBR Legacy type clone of Windows-10 and that is why it dosent work. Try to clone the new SSD within the 5740 and not with your system.

The 5740's bios "Main section" bios should look like this, whith  its SATA Mode [AHCI Mode] and the "Boot section" bios should look like this Boot priority order 1. HDD: with your SSD.

I changed it over to mbr and now it shows it the same as before but now it doesn’t even try to boot also it doesn’t say it didn’t detect windows or anything...
Also I accidentally started a format on the original drive yesterday so I no longer have the original hdd with legacy mbr

The problem is I’m not trying to lose any of my fathers information... but you did just bring up a point for me... I can backup the drive that’s working on my computer then format it install windows on that pc then restore the backup... maybe?
  • You use a microsoft iso and when installing windows, press shift + f10 and type the command notepad.exe to save the files.
