How can I fix a problem with repeated electrical power circuit breaks?
I have an iMac, a Windows 10 Lenovo tower, a Windows 10 Hewlett-Packard tower, a Samsung Chromebook and a Acer series 3000 laptop. I still love my Acer laptop. Its serial number is LXA5505A74XXXXX. The Acer.com website says that my serial number is invalid. I checked and re-interred it 5 times with the same result. THAT IS THE SERIAL NUMBER ON THE WHITE LABEL ON THE BOTTOM OF MY ACER.
Here is my problem: My Acer stopped recharging my battery so I took it to the local computer repair shop. The owner repaired a break in the connection between the power port and the motherboard at a cost to me of $150 which I learned is typical.
It ran okay for about 3 weeks and same problem. I took it back to repair shop and talked to the owner. He said this problem is quite common with this laptop because any strain on the power port flexes the solder connection and breaks easily. He said that Acer did not design the computer to withstand any flexing caused by movement of the power cord. I could not stand to pay $150 every month to fix a design issue. I am a retired aerospace engineer who has experience in instrumentation. Several years ago, I bought the necessary parts and built my own PC so I am somewhat familiar with electronics. I disassembled the laptop and re-soldered the connection and the computer ran just fine for about a month and then the solder joint failed again. I know that I must protect the motherboard from excessive heat during the re-soldering process.
The computer works just great but I need the power to the motherboard in order to recharge the battery. Does anyone out there have any ideas on how to stabilize the power port so that it does not flex and break this solder joint? Is it feasible to "GLUE" the power port to the case so that it does not flex when the power cord is moved?
I doubt if a superglue is the answer. I was thinking about some type similar to the glue used to make a Fiberglas boat or to fix a dent in a car fender.
If I can't fix this, I will have to junk a perfectly good laptop. I love my Acer. I prefer using it to the Chromebook. Please help! Thanks. Winston
