Hi all,

I purchase an acer aspire 3 a315-42-r76u 1 month ago with Amd Ryzen 3700u, 16GB ram dual channel, ssd 500Gb  and i'm very disappointed with this product!
Slow ssd performance, poor screen quality and slow cpu/gpu performance!
The main problem is the TDP of the Amd APU set to 15Watts with the continuous throttling...

Is there a possibility of a new BIOS that unlocks the tdp at at least 25 watts and improves the management of the frequencies or I've just to sell it?

Thanks in advange,

    Hi @SimsIT,

feel sorry to hear about your 1 month experience with the Acer laptop and sofar nothing could help you.

Yes this is from experience of also having an Acer myself - before buying any laptop also an Acer do your due diligence of the product.

Acer is known - this I found out later - for their average display, limited BIOS - like no TDP power settings - and fan control features and low power/temp throttling because of very thin heatpipe and single fan system they have, except for the gaming laptops of course. I am now in the process of looking for a Ryzen 4000 laptop, that is why I am more aware of these things.

About your problem, what always helps - but this will void your warranty - is improve your cooling system, like repaste/good airintake and exhaust, and a cooling pad. The Ryzen cpu you cannot undervolt, but you can try after you have a cooler laptop to set your tdp and temp limit - which is again not supported, but be sure you have decreased your temps. Dont know if the Radeon gpu can be tweaked by MSI Afterburner.

And finally I found this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0CNBcelUWz0 on how to tweak the Acer any further. Dont forget to read the comments below. Maybe it will be helpful to you.

    Good luck man!

You can significantly speed up the machine by uninstalling, not just disabling, any non-Microsoft antivirus like McAfee, Norton's, etc. Most folks only need on Windows defender and malicious software removal tool which are updated regularly. Sorry the CPU with  integrated GPU is designed for optimum heat-dissipation at 15watts max for your laptop so no new BIOS options are likely to be offered to boost this power. Jack E/NJ PS: Make sure your ControlPanel power plan is set to high performance, battery near 100% charged and laptop plugged in BEFORE you start any heavy gaming or graphics loading.

    Thanks for the Answer!

I've already uninstalled all the useless software preinstalled and left only Windows Defender as antivirus. Powerplan is set to high performance, AC Plugged in and battery at 100% .

    Benchmark:

Apex Legends Settings: 720p, Low quality all, Trilinear filtering, TSAA, 2GB budget Texutre, Ambient Occlusion & spot shadows disabled.

For Ryzen 3700u cTDP is 12-35 watt, an option in bios/Uefi for the more experienced that allow more power to APU would have been appreciated ( I use cooling pad with 3 fans, so the heat can be managed )...but I understand that it will never be done so the solution is to sell this laptop :(

@SimsITUse the steps below to download and install the latest AMD Adrenalin driver it will also update your gpu driver
    1. Visit the AMD support page https://www.amd.com/en/support.
    2. Choose your video card model from the product list (e.g. Radeon RX 560X), then click Submit.
    3. Choose your Windows version and select Download for the latest driver available.
    4. Locate the file you downloaded and double click on the .exe file and click Install. If you get a User account control popup message, click Yes to allow this application to make changes to your device.
    5. Click Accept and Express Install to begin the installation.
    6. Click Restart Now.
AFter installation if software doesn't add your game automatically then do manually add your game .exe file in it and launch from there

    >>>I've already uninstalled all the useless software preinstalled >>>

What does this mean? What useless software did you install? And how did you uninstall it? Some of  preinstalled stuff is not so useless. And some of the truly useless software isn't fully uninstalled if you only use ControlPanel's uninstall functions. Jack E/NJ

@GAMING6698 thanks for the tips, I set "high performance" to the battery in advanced power plan settings and has raised the performances a little! :)

@JackE Can you tell me the preinstalled stuff that are useful for better performance? I uninstalled the apps with Apps & features menu in Windows.
Preinstalled Antivirus, Acer Support software, windows 10 preinstalled games after I update Bios and drivers form Acer web site and GPU driver from Amd website.

    Thanks @ all!

    >>>after I update Bios >>>

BIOS firmware updates are NOT RECOMMENDED before you start using the machine!!!! Firmware updates are more risky and irreversible than simple device driver updates.  Since you've already done this, about all I can suggest at this point is to do a full remove everything factory reset using the ALT+F10 cold boot method shown in the video below. After the factory reset, make sure the ControlPanel's restore point app has SystemProtection turned on and uninstall ONLY the non-Microsoft virus scanners. Don't uninstall any of the ACER proprietary software as they can be very helpful in solving ACER proprietary hardware issues. They are NOT useless. Jack E/NJ

I have updated Bios form 1.06 to 1.07

I've installed and set Ryzen Controller to 25Watts with 2 seconds of re-apply time. Following the results:

Cpu temp was always under or near 70° ( I tested Apex for 30 minutes right after all other benchmakrs )

This laptop needs to have the TDP unlocked at 25 Watts to be a good product and perform well!!!

Your laptop's thermal design is for a CPU with 15watts max according to the specfications as shown below. Thus ACER is unlikely to change these specifications. Sorry. Jack E/NJ
