Is my 5740G motherboard really toast?

Hi folks.
I recently sent my laptop in for a quotation/repair. The machine starts up and seemingly runs fine but the screen stays black, nothing. If I connect an external monitor, again nothing. This would seem to confirm the original diagnosis - that the problem is not with the screen, rather with the motherboard, something to do with the video chip (?). But I have my doubts and I'll tell you why; I suspected it might be a Windows driver issue so I replaced Windows 7 Pro with Ubuntu. Ubuntu runs and displays PERFECTLY but only on the external monitor - still nothing on the laptops screen. To me this suggests it is a driver issue and not a problem with the motherboard (?). When I try reinstalling Windows however I just get a load of weird lettering and dots on the external monitor. I would be fascinated to hear what you guys think the problem might be. I would dearly love to get Windows working again, or a dual boot even, but if I can't sort this I'll just have to settle for second prize and run it with Ubuntu only.
Cheers,
Brian

A bit awkward without Screenshot facility. For the record, I've just installed Windows 7 in VirtualBox on Ubuntu and it runs perfectly. Still desperate to know what's wrong with machine though.
