Shut laptop off. Press and hold F2 key, then turn machine on. A BIOS menu should appear. Press F10 to save settings and exit. The machine should then start. However, you will probably continue to have this problem until the BIOS coin battery is replaced on the mainboard. Jack E/NJ

Shut the laptop off again. Then try to get back into the BIOS menu with the F2 key method. Does the hard disk show up in the BIOS Information tab? Jack E/NJ

Sorry. Disregard my last post. Your HDD seems to be disconnected or needs to be re-seated to the mainboard. Jack E/NJ

Can I do this or am I better just buying a new one? Thanks again for your time

You should be able to do this without too much effort.  On old models like yours, first remove the charger and battery pack. There should  a drive door on the bottom of the case attached with screws. Check out this video. http://www.laptopinventory.com/LaptopInventory.php/Acer/Aspire/3050/Hard Drive
