You could try removing power cord and using a paper clip in the battery reset hole on the bottom of the M5.

Why is it that tech companies make their service manuals so hard to find? They should come with every computer straight out, there would be less tech support needed even if a few would try stupid things still.....

Got the service guide, found the miscroscopic hole and all is well. Now to figure out what to NAME the BIOS file because it's not named like it should be to actually UPDATE the lappie.

That makes perfect sense though. Yes. Yes it does.

<bangs head on wall from the sheer stupid of it>

HOWEVER I am LOVING this Ultrabook. Review coming, and I am slapping a 500Gb Samsung SSD in it and dual booting.... Windows and something X I mean Roar, I mean else.

    Thanks for the help.....

Information on the battery reset is in the Quick Start and User Guides as well as the Service Guide.

My M5 has the 128GB SSD which I hope to change for a larger one later when I am 100% sure the machine is trouble free. My Service Guide only details the HDD version and not the SSD but I can't see there being a problem (famous last words). I am guessing that your Service Guide is the same as mine.

I suspect the mSata slot is empty and I also wonder if a) adding one would work and b) if it would serve any useful purpose.

I've had it a few weeks now and once I got rid of the dire Win8 in favour of Win7, it is excellent (I just hope it stays that way given the many problems others seem to be experiencing). I must say on my first visit to this board I felt I had made an awful (and very costly) mistake going the Acer route! Well, so far so good. It really is very good! I've just installed the latest nVidia beta drivers (320.00) and frame rates are up again.

If I had to fault the M5, it would be the screen which it has to be said is rather poor - if it only had an IPS panel it would be a killer laptop (but then the price would be through the roof). It is perhaps more apparent to me as my M5 sits on the desk next to my Macbook Pro!

I've never been entirely successful running 'toshinhack' but I would be very interested to hear how you get on with that.

If you check your Service Guide you will see how the BIOS is installed (file type .fd). However, this method is completely different from that used for the downloaded BIOS. Surely, if you simply follow the instructions included with your downloaded BIOS you will not need to be concerned with file type and naming convention. Why do you need to change it anyway?

I downgraded the BIOS because for OSX I thought I had to. Because I don't have the nVidia (or AMD for that matter) model and just have the HD4000 I didn't have to.

Now I can't upgrade the BIOS back from 1.07 to 2.09 or 2.11 which I would like to do to get UEFI back. The Insyde BIOS updater won't allow it and I renamed the exe to zip and extracted the files but I don't see anything in there size or name wise that looks right to rename to XXXXX.fd to restore via the TINY button Fn Esc method.

Any advice on how to get the raw 2.09 or 2.11 BIOS file?

Also while I am in begging mode, I need to get all the Windows 7 32 bit and I say AGAIN 32 bit drivers for all the hardware in this unit. My customer has to use 32 bit as their proggys are 16 bit and will not run in the 64 bit version of Winblows.

Any suggestions besides hunt, download, try, uninstall etc.? I found them all eventually once, but have a feeling I got some not quite right because of stability issues I had.

    Thanks to all.....

The M5 was never produced with a 32bit OS so there won't be 32bit drivers provided by Acer. Only option I can see is trawl around the OEM's yet again and hope for the best.

I can't help with raw BIOS files (unlikely to be available) but you may wish to examine one or two BIOS file on Acer download site which are in .fd format. It appears a BIOS file consists of an EC ROM (.ROM) + BIOS ROM (.bin) combined to create the .fd. Whether they can be extracted is another matter. (See page 2-33 of Service Guide.)

Personally, I would run the available executable through a debugger setting breakpoints as necessary. Hopefully, that would enable you to extract the raw file.

    Thanks Alan,

I realize that about the Acer not supporting 32. Hell I don't like what the client wants me to do but they're payin. Smiley Happy

As for the BIOS, why the heck are they making this so WEIRD?!?! Just gimme a flat file I can push out and be done wiht it. I read the service manual and realize that there's a little two file voodoo that must happen but when I ectract the contents of the exe all I get that would come close to a 6Mb BIOS file is 1.9Mb.

SO why does Acer suggest I use some convoluted battery button push Fn Esc thing when I can't even download the file to make the crisis disk it refers to?

Seems like a lot of monkey in the middle, unnecessary *****. like Microsoft. Smiley Happy

Anyone have the Crisis File they can gimme? Otherwise I have to run the restore of the system, installing Windows 8 and hope it updates the BIOS in the process.

    Will it? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?

    OK.

I can't really see a restore updating the BIOS.

I've searched around for Crisis.SOP and have not found anything. However, I did find a 5 year old thread (I know, but do read on) for a different model but using an Insyde BIOS.

Now it is a long shot, but if you're currently dead in the water it may be worth a try. All you need is:

    1. A small USB stick (it needs to be formatted as FAT or FAT16).

    2. An .fd DOS BIOS file.

Grab the 1.07 BIOS for Win7 (I believe this to be the last issued as a .fd - and it's 6MB!!).

    http://global-download.acer.com/GDFiles/BIOS/BIOS/BIOS_Acer_1.07_A_A.zip?acerid=634792162685338072&Step1=Notebook, Ultrabook&Step2=Aspire&Step3=Aspire M5-581T&OS=701&LC=en&BC=Acer&SC=EMEA_27

This is the only file (Q5LJ1x64.fd) that should be on the USB. (I don't think it needs to be renamed but who knows?)

Do the Fn, ESC, Paper clip, Power lead and power button thing and see what happens!!

If successful, you only need go through the normal BIOS update route to bring it up to date.

Here is the link to get the finer details/confirm my findings:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/acer/284686-aspire-5315-bios-recovery-using-usb-thumbdrive.html

Could it be that easy? Fingers crossed.

I sure appreciate the detailed response and help, but I guess I didn't clarify my situation enough.

I am on the 1.07 BIOS already and was able to successfully flash it using the method you described. My problem is i want to go back UP to the 2.x UEFI BIOS and can't seem to do it at all.

The Insyde utility in Windows won't allow it and I can't find the files I need to do an update with the USB drive and the battery button / Fn / Esc method.

I just don't understand why Acer must make it so hard to get the files in any flavor needed. What about Linux users? I realize this is a small percentage of people who hack this way, but it's no skin off their nose to provide the files in the proper format. I honestly love this laptop but if I had known how ridiculous this one aspect was I probably would hve picked an ASUS.

    Thanks for the help though!

    Oops!

Not your problem - I should learn to pay more attention.

It's good that you can confirm that the method I described works ok.

I will be sure to retain a .fd BIOS just in case I ever need it.

It's all a bit odd as I've seen posts from people who claim to go up and down like yo-yos and others, like yourself, that can't.

I am out of ideas now but I will keep looking.

Should I find anything pertinent, I will add to this thread.
