You have two separate problems. A double whammy. A perfect storm.

Problem #1 is typically caused by either an improper installation of Linux or you’re using too old of a BIOS.

Problem #2 (grub rescue>) was caused by the improper deletion of Linux...you forgot to delete the Linux EFI  entries.....so it’s still trying to boot it.

hi, there are a couple of things you might try, but you need to be aware what you are doing in linux with in a terminal windows.

You said that it immediately boots up linux and if you press f2, the BIOS does not appear.

    1) In Linux, you can startup a terminal window, and learn to use the command "efibootmgr" by checking "man efibootmgr".
This command can do things in a similar way like what you can do in the BIOS.
Try first to make the timeout time longer with the efibootmgr command and try to change the boot order so that windows boot mgr is the first to boot, instead of linux

    2) the reason that f2 does not invoke the BIOS can be because the linux startup setting in grub has been incorrectly set.
Again open in linux a terminal window.
Check the /etc/default/grub file if "acpi=off" has been set in the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT setting.
If yes, remove this setting and update the grub setting "sudo update-grub" and then restart

    Good luck!

    Hi @ed4myra

I gave a lousy sitrep in my previous post....let me try again.

    1. He can't get in to BIOS settings
    2. He can't boot in to Windows anymore
    3. The F12 boot menu isn't working....he can't boot anything
    4.  He deleted the linux partitions.  But he didn't delete the linux EFI entries.   So when he turns on the laptop it goes straight to "Grub rescue>"

    @johnlee1313

It's an easy fix for someone who is skilled at opening up a nice, sleek, thin laptop without damaging it.  That's not me.  It would be mangled if I tried it..... I would recommend contacting Acer or someone who has skills to open up a thin laptop and get at SSD. I'm fairly sure the screws on back are T6 torx.  Acer might just use crisis....flash BIOS and regain access to BIOS and boot up Windows USB....then command prompt and delete linux EFI entries.  Not sure.

I'm sorry but I'm all out of ideas.  Again, if you had an easy laptop to open up and grab SSD out of there....it's an easy fix.  @billsey is a lot more knowledgeable about disassembling thin laptops than I am so he might offer an opinion.  Good luck!

Edit:  I'm not sure if you have M.2 SATA SSD or M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD

    Edit2:

It wouldn't hurt to try a battery reset, although I suspect you already tried that.

The white underscore is likely due to grub being started, then aborted before actually loading the OS. There should be a (very short) time between the POST that the hardware does on power up and the launch of grub. You need to be clicking the key during that moment to get the BIOS to launch before grub.

I'm pressing f2 right as the laptop turns on and I still get the white underscore.

I had a similar problem with my v3-571. What happens when you press ctrl + alt + del and press f2 again? This user was able to solve the problem: https://community.acer.com/en/discussion/comment/551654/#Comment_551654
The problem is that you are not able to install windows. You can disconnect the ssd and install windows on the ssd, using another computer. Then, connect the ssd again and check if windows starts. I think it's worth trying!

When I do ctrl alt del on the grub rescue page it kinda just restarts the laptop and I still get the same blank screen with the white underscore when I press f2 after that

While I was hoping I could do this without taking the laptop apart that did end up working for me thanks <3

@johnlee1313 How did you make the bios accessible again? Was it the command ctrl + alt + del or the tip of the other user?

I had to take the ssd out of the laptop and reformat it on another computer before plugging it back into the laptop where it just booted off the usb and I was able to reinstall windows

I see that you were able to go in through the emergency airlock to defeat Grub/HAL   ;)
Grub did not want to be disconnected.

My acer swift 3 isn’t working, when I boot it the system only works but the screen doesn’t boot. I have tried using HDMI thinking the screen is spoilt but when I use that too, it doesn’t show on the external screen
  • @Bismarck442I suggest you ask a new question.
