I want to upgrade the Aspire with a SSD.  I checked for a compatible one.  When replacing the HD with the SSD I realised the SSD 2.5" Sata III does not have the pins to connect to the power slot on the Aspire.  Is there a fix?  I can't seem to find any SATA III SSD's with the additional pins.

    Hi,
What you see when you remove the current HDD? there's a HDD connector, the connector has  both SATA and Power pins in them, you don't need a separate power connector like in Desktop PCs. You can replace your HDD with any 2.5" SATA SSD.

I don't understand why the SP SSD 2.5" SATA III does not power on when I plug it into the Acer.  There is a difference from the photo you posted.  Mine has a ribbon cable running just off to the side and over the HDD.  The HDD has three sets of pin connectors.  But the SSD only has the two like all other SSDs I have looked at.  Obviously this third (white connector with maybe six pins in two rows - which looks to me like a power connector) supplies power.  The SSD runs fine using an external USB adapter - I boot from USB and it works.  But installed in the HDD slot it is not detected by the BIOS.

    Hi,
Could you please post the picture of it, You need these section only, ignore the third connector.

  • Would it be interesting if you provided the ssd model as well?

The brand of the SSD is SP.  I am going to try again swapping the HD for the SSD and HOPE that somehow, I did not push in the pins far enough and when I power up the laptop the BIOS will detect the drive, but I am fairly certain I had done everything correctly the first time around.  Thank you all for your input and I will let you know whether I had any success or not.

OK I have additional information that I HOPE may help solve this problem.  I removed the Seagate HD and replaced it with the SSD SATA III drive.  On startup I got the same blue screen and message telling me a component was not detected and I need to use recoverey tools or contact the administrator.  I then removed the SSD drive and connected it through USB externally.  I changed the boot sequence accordingly.  On startup I received the same message that a component is not detected.  I surmise that this means the Seagate HDD is linked to the motherboard.  I do not recall the term for this but it appears it means the motherboard is tied to the manufacturer's components.

I cloned the HDD to the SSD using Macrium software.  Is there a workaround?  Would a different cloning program overcome this link between the motherboard and drive?
  • Did you say that there is a sata cable here?

I don't understand, as this photo is from the service manual for model es1-512 and there is no sata cable. There is only the sata connector integrated on the motherboard. Can you send a picture of your connection? Also, when you connect the ssd, can you access the bios normally?

The ribbon cable runs from where your red arrow points to the circuit board where that pink dot is.  When the SSD is in the slot I can access the BIOS and it shows the SSD correctly.  But when I start the laptop it goes straight to the blue screen and message telling me a component is missing.  I really do think it is a matter of this motherboard NOT accepting a component the manufacturer did not supply.  The BIOS clearly recognises the SSD,

  • Can you inform the version of the bios?

Also take a picture showing the error message, that might help with diagnosis.

No the error message comes up when I replace the HDD with the SSD ,  It comes up when I remove the HDD and boot from USB with the SSD.  In other words, if the HDD is removed I get the message that a component is missing even if I have the SSD in its place and the boot sequence identifies the SSD as the boot up device.  When I boot up with the USB with the SSD and with the HDD in place I get no error message.

  • Do you still have the original stock operating system provided by acer, installed on the hdd? If you have, I suggest you try this here:

Sorry but my laptop does not support M2.
  • I know that. But it is a procedure that also works with a 2.5 "ssd.

The reason I cloned the HDD to the SSD was so I don't have to reinstall Windows 10.  As it stands now the laptop boots from the USB with the SSD and I have taped it to the laptop cover.  There is no way to boot up the laptop if the Seagate HDD is not present.  I don't remember the term for this but since this is the cheapest Acer available, I am pretty sure now the components are OEM-linked to the motherboard.  In other words, this laptop will not take the SSD.
