my computer will not turn on or off. tech support told me it is a hardware or mother board problem.

Possible. What happens when you hit the power button? We need more information.

Perhaps a silly question but,--
If you can't turn it on, how do you know that you can't turn it off?

My Aspire X3400G will not turn on either. Power unit fan and hard drive start and stay running but nothing else comes on. I have had trouble in the past and it would finally start after unplugging and restarting several times. The led's in the switch do not light up when it does not start. I changed the CHMOS battery which did not help.
