Laptop model ph315-51
Its been 2 years, the laptop was heating a lot i i oponed the laptop to clean fan and i saw lot of dust in fan, thermal paste solid. I cleaned the paste with iso propyl alcohol and applied new pads, i guess i i had applied some extra pads, but nevertheless cpu temps are awsm now, 55 degree for assasin creed, but gpu temps are screwed, they start at 50 then rise and rise and rise till 88 sometimes reach 96 and blue screen, i ioticed later on i had applied pads of multiple sizes (0.5-1.5mm) please suggest me sizes of pad to be applied and location of the pads it would be a great help as i contacted acer support, they were like we need to change whole motherboard and graphic card.

Acer gave this stupid smiley face on my profile, but im really not happy right now😔0

You will find a lot of conflicting information on pad size but all 2019 models use the sizes below1 mm on everything except vmem which is 0.5mm with a little paste, be happy now

Gpu vmemory uses thermal tape not pads. Not sure what size though. This is for 2019 model.0

This is for 2019 model. Many Helios users on this Forum have successfully used 0.5 mm on the 2019 model, wouldn’t hurt to try both. The problem with pads etc.. is that Acer don’t supply any specs so everything becomes a collection of user experiences. My opinion is to leave pads alone unless damaged or absolutely essentilal to replace them

Yeah I repasted my cpu and gpu last night and some of the pink thermal tape on the vram seperated when I took off the heat sink. I left as is and just put the heat sink back on when finished. Gpu seemed fine after gaming a bit. Just in the future if I need to change the thermals on the vrams it'd be nice to know the exact size needed. I'd rather stick with thermal tape as it seems to be more putty like vs. the thermal pads I believe.1

I suppose both would work mate

Any brand of 0.5mm pads recommended? Then you just add a bit of paste on it?0
-
No paste they are double sided adhesive. The 0.5mm vmem may need a little paste but try it without any 1st. Good video on repasting and Thermal pads for the helios 300
No paste they are double sided adhesive, Arctic Thermal pads from Amazon are good. The 0.5mm vmem may need a little paste but try it without any 1st. Good video on repasting and Thermal pads for the helios 300

You can also use any thermal paste in the vram chips to replace the current one i have seen ppl using kryonaut on it and no issues

I'll pick up some Arctic 0.5mm pads I think then and try those. How do you test if they work? Close the heat sink and see if there are square indentations in the heat sink? Here is a couple pics of my laptop when I opened it up initially. Looks like maybe some of the vrams were not even making contact.

well, for my testing i assemble the laptop, open a Game (like Red Dead Redemption 2) and check if thermals are maintained constant, if the graph is constantly increasing, then ***** got screwed,i think i also made a noob mistake, i placed some extra pads as well, luckily i have a photo clicked of original layout0

Replaced all pads with 0.5mm, the thing is temps for cpu 62 degree and temps of gpu around 73 degree at resident evil 7, its not spiking, remaining same, though 10 degree gap is too much0
-
10 degree gap is fine

note: i just checked today, now temp difference is of 2-3 degree only, i dont have much experience but does the thermalpaste or the pads take 6-12 hours to settle down like that0
-
Not really but when you first checked it proper overall contact may have not been made. This temperature fluctuation suggests the pads were not correctly seated or one or more are of the incorrect thickness. I still think 1mm and 0.5mm for vmems is correct but if your temps stay good then hopefully all is well
