Eventually the screen gets messed and freezes. Computer must be restarted. I'm using Linux Mint, but imagine it'll happen with other OS too.
Does anyone know what causes it, and if the freezes are avoidable? Software or hardware problem?

Definitely software or hardware. :) I'd first look at video drivers to make sure they display is not getting corrupted by the software. It looks like you are getting left/right shifts on each line, but the lines themselves are in the right order, or close to it. If replacing the video drivers doesn't help it could be hardware, that's pretty easy to check, boot into the BIOS and let it run there for long enough to cause the issue. If it's still looking good then it's not likely to be the hardware.
