No Bootable Device Predator PH315-51

Hey all,

I've gone through every post and forum I can find looking for solutions to this issue and have had no lasting success.

My Helios 300 which I've had for about 6 months will frequently and randomly start up to greet me with a No Bootable Device Error. I first had the issue in November and could get past it with a battery reset. I thought it was gone permanently after I disabled fast boot in BIOS and Windows and didn't have any issues for over a month.
However, after updating to the latest version of Windows (the major security update that came out earlier this month) the issue has returned and is much harder to mitigate, even causing my device to crash while in use twice. Sometimes a battery reset will solve it, disabling and re enabling secure boot has worked, changing settings in BIOS and resetting to default, and more random solutions that don't give me any good pattern to work off of because they work sometimes and other times don't.

When the issue is going on, I see absolutely nothing in my BIOS in the boot menu. It's like the SSD has vanished.  I can't try the Legacy mode either, the only option in my BIOS is UEFI.

I tried a system restore back to my old Windows version only to have it crash to the same no bootable device screen during the process, so I tried a Windows reset, also no lasting success.

I've run chkdsk/r countless times when the computer has been running and the Windows install itself seems to be okay. I recently moved all my game installs to an external drive so the SSD isn't super full either.

I'm worried that it's the SSD itself or the Mobo wigging out and not working properly since I've tried every software fix that I can think of.

I don't think the laptop has been physically damaged, my backpack has a well padded laptop sleeve where I keep the computer and the charger and I am careful not to throw the device around. I had no issues through two plane flights, two days of road trips, the problem only resurfaced after the Windows update (which is confusing because Windows seems to not be the issue).

Is there anything else worth trying before I go to the effort of sending it to Acer? I am a college student and so being without my computer is less than ideal, but I can get by in the interim with the library computers. I would open it myself to look for physical problems inside as I've built several PCs and have good know how, but I don't want to risk voiding my warranty and being in an even worse spot.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

It looks like you haven't tried a clean install using the Microsoft's ISO. Make an image using Macrium Reflect first, then clean install.

The SSD is the Intel 760P and I am running BIOS 1.26.  I have also done the SSD drivers update and RST hotfix listed on the drivers page. I don't know if I've done the NVME fix yet, but I'll try if I can get into it.
  • It is not necessary, as your notebook already has the latest bios. Have you tried to update the ssd firmware?

Yes, I downloaded and ran as an administrator the Firmware Update for the SSD listed on Acer's site. I didn't see any install prompts after verifying that I wanted it to make changes to my device, but I gave it about 5 minutes and then restarted as per the README instructions.

The issue at the moment is that the SSD hasn't been detected for over 12 hours, even running a Windows install USB I can't do anything because the SSD is invisible. If by chance it does reappear that will be my first course of action.
  • I suggest you download this program, to check if there is a newer version of what is available on the Acer website: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/29248/Intel-SSD-Firmware-Update-Tool?product=129831

do you have another SSD you can try out?  It may be the drive itself, or check it in another system.  That might give you a better understanding regarding the viability of the drive.

I turned the computer on and it booted normally for the first time in almost 24 hours, so I went ahead and did this immediately. There was an update available for Intel RST but the SSD firmware itself did not change. I will continue to monitor and see what happens.

Unfortunately no, I don't have another M2 drive. Either way, using a different drive would require opening the system all the way up and I would prefer not to do that in the interest of not voiding the warranty by accident.
  • When the "no bootable device" appears, does the ssd also disappear in the windows information tab?

The SSD disappears completely from all sources. BIOS boot order, F12 boot order, and it doesn't appear as an option to install Windows on from my recovery USB.

It has over the past two weeks or so. Before that it happened a couple times I'm November and then went away for a while after I disabled fast boot in the BIOS and Windows
  • It is strange that this model does not have version 1.28 of the bios. Models with similar motherboards, such as the model an515-52 and which have the same bios file, are already in version 1.28. However, I don't know if this version will fix your problem.

It is definitely strange. I am wondering if the issue is with hardware rather than software (maybe a bad connection or faulty drive).

    Hi to everyone.
The same problem happened on my Aspire VX5 - 591G too, when I was playing games there were orange lines passing throught the screen, I thought of a GPU glitch and didn't care. After some mins my PC closed itself without a warning. When I booted again it welcomed me with that "No Bootable Device" error. I spent so much time searching solution online and none of them worked because my BIOS wasn't seeing the hard drive. I changed partitions over and over again, I reseted BIOS to its' default values, shut down 3 times to get the Windows Auto Repair but none of them worked. After changing something on BIOS (I don't remember what did I change) my PC opened!

My PC was crashing so much so I made a clean install of generic Windows and now I'm using generic drivers of Intel and Nvidia and no problems at all!

So I suggest you to reset BIOS to its' default values and try again. And do you have the same issues with me? (For example PC shutting down before giving that error). However don't install generic drivers or Windows because it might cause problems.

My Intel and NVidia drivers are generic but installed on top of Acer's drivers. Windows 10 is clean-installed using ISO and didn't have a single BSOD since then.

If you meant UEFI and Legacy, I tried both of them but nothing happened.
