i see orange light when i plug in that indicates charging. but when i press the power button, the orange light either turns off or starts blinking. My laptop is out of warranty so live chat is not an option. (unless someone gives me their serial number, just kidding i don't know if that's allowed..unless)

Remove the charger. Gently press a paperclip into the battery reset pinhole on the bottom of the laptop for about 10 seconds. Let the machine rest for 15 mins. Then plug the charger back in and try turning the laptop on again  Jack E/NJ

@JackE i tried that as well, doesn't work. do you know if the display is required for the laptop to start? i think it might be broken so maybe the circuit is being cut off or something?

From my experience, when you drop a laptop, plugs and connections get dislodged and/or broken and problems (like you have mentioned) happen! It might be that the monitor plug might have dislodged (its usually in/at the hinge area) and this could also have happened to the power socket on the front right side. Open the laptops top cover and inspect those two plugs and also inspect the monitor, if its not cracked, which is the only way to solve these problems, then, either replace and/or plug appropriate plugs in. You either do this on your own or get a technician to do this for you? Good luck.

Unplug the charger. Then try to turn the machine on. What happens to the blue power light and orange battery light?  Jack E/NJ

the display connector seems to be worn out a little, but i'm wondering if that should affect the computer turning on. like the fan is not spinning, no lights are turning on when the charger is unplugged.

If you've got the bottom cover off, see if you can find at least one spring-loaded switch on the mainboard near the RAM sockets. Jack E/NJ

oh yes. is it called "dip"or "swg1"

That's the one. It's called a safety interlock switch. If the bottom cover is misaligned or not pressing hard enough against it to keep it turned on, it will cut all power to the mainboard. I suspect that when you dropped it, the cover became distorted and is not pressing the switch hard enough to keep it in the on position. Try putting a piece of tape or some other spacer on the switch or inside the cover, so it's firmly depressed when the cover is screwed back on. Jack E/NJ

no it doesn't work. i even tried holding it down physically. side note, when i plug the laptop in, the orange light turns on but when i hold the power button, it turns off. then i let go and press down again, the orange light turns on again while the power button is pressed down. same thing happens until i unplug and plug in again.
i'm thinking that something in the motherboard is broken but the power light is working. would that make sense or not possible

NO!!! Don't try to hold the power button. This will turn the laptop off. Just plug the laptop back in till the orange light turns on. Then quickly but firmly press and release the power button. Don't hold  it down or it will just shut the laptop off. Jack E/NJ

doesn't work. blue light flashes briefly and turns off. yesterday i removed the display to try and eliminate variables but that shouldn't stop the fan from turning on right? right now i just have my laptop base without the display connected with hdmi cable to a monitor.

Suggests a short circuit from a mainboard conductor trace or solder joint to a ground such as near where the screws hold the mainboard to the case. It could also mean the RAM module or HDD have internal shorts. Many possibilities. I suggest removing, one by one like you did with the LCD screen, the HDD, the RAM modules and anything else that's removable and test to see if the power will stay on. Jack E/NJ
