CPU Fan Struggling to Spin - PH315-51-78NP

So I've had a problem with my CPU fan recently. It's having a hard time to spin. I know it's not dead because I tried running a game that demands CPU usage and also set max fan speed on Predator Sense. At the lower left side of the laptop I can hear some budging as if the fan is trying to spin but stops immediately. I did check underneath the laptop and this was the case. It spins for about half a second then immediately stops.

As for the things I've done, I opened up the back panel and tried to clean the blades without removing the heat sink. I tried to rotate both fans manually and noticed that the CPU fan was a bit harder to rotate but it could rotate no problem. It wasn't as fluid as the GPU fan though. I updated both Windows and predator sense to the latest version. I also read online that putting the laptop to sleep would kickstart the fans but it didn't do anything. I also don't have warranty anymore because 1, I opened the back panel already and 2, I bought it in a different country. Any help would be appreciated. :)

Model is PH315-51-78NP

Just to add, the CPU fan is at 0 RPM when it spins for half a second before stopping,a it keeps on repeating.
  • Have you tried resetting the battery to check if it solves the problem?

No it's not. I opened it up to clean the blades. I bought it last year.

The fans are budging I can see it underneath, but something is stopping it from doing full cycles. When I opened it up yesterday I could use my finger to rotate it no problem and I didn't find any obstruction. It was just a bit less "oiled" compared to the GPU fan.
  • I think you should get a new fan:

Is there anything else I can do before getting a new fan? How do you tell if it's completely dead? I can see the fan underneath and it's spinning from time to time for half seconds. It's not stopped completely

DenneD completely dead  its damaged theres no fix possible here (usually this can happen to too much humidity too much dust etc they will stop working gaming laptops are to be constantly cleaned and maintained ) as @egydiocoelho stated you have to buy new fans you can pm @Kev0806 directly asn ask him if he can get you that part he is an authorized acer parts partner or you have to google it and try to find it yourself either probably on aliexpress/ebay or any other shop

Thank you. I'll check it out once I have free time. One last thing, since the fan isn't working, is there any harm using the laptop at all aside from the CPU having higher temperatures? I have to use my laptop so I put an external fan on the left side to cool it a bit. The temperature on Predator Sense stays below 80C. Is this fine as a temporary solution?

That is really not a good Idea. There is a high possibility you are going to cause more harm than good by doing this, system board Short or other damage.  I would have the unit repaired ASAP rather than using it, that's my suggestion.

Update: So I tried turning the fans to max today and the CPU fan started spinning, but it wasn't reaching max speed. It was only at around 3200-3400 RPM while the GPU fan was at ~6000 RPM. Any idea what's going on?
  • I still think the fan is failing.

I've been looking for an exact fan replacement on AliExpress, but no luck. Would you happen to have a link to it?
