Nitro AN515-52 - Incredibly Slow HDD Read/Write Speeds, 100% Disk Usage + System Hang

Hi,

I recently purchase the above laptop and have had nothing but trouble with it. When gaming, it runs overall ok, however I have numerous issues with system hanging when Alt+TABbing out, as well as when opening apps like Chrome and Discord. The system would take 30-90 seconds to open Chrome and actually Respond, otherwise I'm met with "Program Not Responding".

Issue has been improved slightly since running TrayPwrD3, however it still has moments.

Further more, my major issue right now is to do with the HDD itself. The speed of this is absolutely atrocious!!! I understand SSD is the way to go, however the hDD should be able to function well enough yet I'm being met with average write speeds of 9-16MB/s, and read speeds even lower.

Case in point, it took nearly an hour(!!!) for the laptop to install Microsoft Office due to the slow HDD speeds, and things like Steam updates are an absolute killer. The update itself will download in seconds thanks to my internet speeds, however the portion where it installs the update can take anywhere from 15+ minutes for an update as small as 30mb...

One of my most regularly played games, Hunt Showdown, is an absolute nightmare for updates as they continually put out small patches from 15-300mb. The downloads are fine, but I'll be sitting staring at the install screen for up to an hour. This doesn't feel right...

I've ran software to check for problems, and the Health of the HDD is always showing as Good, Care Centre is not picking up any issues and I run Defrags/Clean Ups on a regular basis.

Is this normal with this Laptop?

I plan on adding an SSD to the available slot, however after spending £700 on the laptop, I feel like it should function adequately without the need to add an additional piece of hardware...

    Good Morning FrustratedFifer !

Have you checked if the Windows update is not pending downloads?

Have you checked in the task manager if the disk has a 100% usage error constantly?

    Hi MaClane,

It isn't a continous error, it only seems to max at 100% when I am installing/booting up a game, which is understandable. The issue is then that it takes so long for installs, so it max's out for a considerable period of time. As you can see, currently the usage isn't a problem whatsoever as I am using the Laptop for basic tasks and nothing is updating/installing.

I previously had issues with Windows Updates not installing correctly, and Task Manager always showing the Update Tool which was eating right into the Disk usage, however I eventually managed to fully update windows, as well as going through every option in Device Manager to manually search online for updates.

    However, whilst typing this reply, I checked TM again and was greeted with this;

Nothing else was being done on the laptop, no updates or installations being completed, it just started to spike for no real reason.

From this, it does appear that the issue isn't some form of error causing a continuous HDD usage problem, but is directly related to the HDD struggling to keep up when trying to use it for anything other than the most basic of tasks. In game, the games run perfectly fine for the most part. Occasional frame rate spikes do happen, and the longer I play the more often they become, but I believe this is due to the CPU often being in the 90's evenw ith Max Fans and Coolboost running. I have purchased a cooling pad to try and help combat this though.

I am more concerned that perhaps the HDD itself is faulty, which is causing the speeds to be so terrible. I would normally have returned this to the store I bought it from, however I am in the middle of studies with tests due over the coming weeks and I can't afford to send my laptop off for a period of time for a repair. My main hope is that there's something that I'm missing. I aim to install an SSD to run alongside, and use this for either my OS or the most demanding games I play, but obviously that would still leave part of the system running poorly.

Many thanks for your reply, I appreciate your help :)

Using CrystalDiskInfo, does HDD health have any problems?

Nope, that is one of the apps I used to investigate any potential problems, and the system indicator shows the health status of my system as "Good".

Initially I nullified the issue somewhat by downloading a free program, TrayPwrD3 and starting it whenever I booted up my laptop.

It worked enough that my laptop was usable. However, I have since installed an SSD as my primary drive and use the HDD as a secondary drive which has made a massive difference and the laptop runs perfectly now.
