faded sn / snid numbers
I bought an Acer Aspire 5517 about 2 years ago at a pawn shop.
I have just recently started getting messages that my operating system is not legal and I need to activate it.
The labels for the product key, sn, and snid are faded. Is there any way I can get the correct product key to enter it on the screen that is asking for it?
What solutions do I have?
Thank you,
Kenny G

All products manufactured by Acer do not need a product key when reloaded with Acer Recovery Disc. If the Operating System is requesting a product key, then it may not be the standard OEM version of the Operating System that shipped with the computer and you will need to restore your Operating System to the OEM version in order to resolve the issue.
You can do system recovery form hard disk partition without any recovery discs.
During the process, all data stored on your computer will be overwritten. This means all your files, such as email and photos, will be erased. Therefore, we recommend making a backup of all personal data before starting the recovery process.
To start the system recovery:
- Restart the computer.
- When the Acer logo appears on the screen, press the left Alt, and the F10 keys.
- If you are prompted with a Microsoft Windows boot screen, press the Enter key.
- After the Acer eRecovery Management application has loaded, select your restore type.
- Read the notice, and then click Next when you are ready.
- Click Next to begin the restore process.
I hope this helps! If this was useful, please hit 'Yes' or 'Like'! Thanks! 😊

Sharanji,
Thank you for the quick response.
Hopefully the recovery partition is still intact, as it is a friend's machine I will have to check it this weekend and let you know.
It does have Windows 7 Home on it and from what I find it shipped with Windows Vista,
.
If I can recover Vista, I can then upgrade to Windows 7,
, with a new upgrade he will have to buy.
Thanks again and I will post the results here when mission accomplished.
G'day,
