SW5-012 motherboard replacement

Hello,

My Acer Switch 10 was running under Windows 10 up to a point where something happened (God knows) and I was forced to have the motherboard replaced. I have installed a new motherboard that came with the factory settings (Windows 8.1). I am being asked by the system to activate the Windows 8.1 copy but obviously, I do not have a key. The only key I have for Windows 8.1 is the key of the defective motherboard which is not compatible with the new board. By the way, the BIOS version is 1.20.

A while ago when the now-defective motherboard was working fine, I took a system image of Windows 10. I have made an attempt at using this image. The idea being to get rid of Windows 8.1 and the licence issue by substituing a valid Windows 10 version. In order to ahcieve this, I have used the advanced startup option (restart now) of the recovery menu from Windows 8.1. Then I have selected Troubleshoot/Advanced options/System Image Recovery. The system restarts, asks me to select an account, to provide the password and finally, it identifies the system image from my external backup unit connected through the USB port from the keyboard. When I click Next to proceed to the restore, I receive the following error message: To restore this computer, Windows needs to format the drive that the Windows Recovery Environment is currently running on. To continue with the restore, shut down this computer and boot it from a Windows installation disc or a system repair disc and then try the restore again.

This where I am stuck now. I have created a system repair disc using a USB key and I have modified the boot priority by forcing USB HDD as being the primary device to boot from, followed by the Windows Boot Manager. When the computer boots, I can see the light of my USB key blinking but the computer boots from the Windows Boot Manager. It looks like the USB key is ignored.

My question is: how do I proceed to move from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 by using a Windows installation disc or a system repair disc?

Anybody has a suggestion?

You first have to get the 8.1 re-registered with MS. Use the phone method and explain that the motherboard has been replaced and they should get you back to working. Once the 8.1 is working you can just do the upgrade to 10 and it'll use the existing license. If you try to bypass the 8.1 side of things you'll end up having to purchase a Windows 10 license.

    Thanks Billsey for your comments.

While waiting for a reply to my post, I have managed to move ahead and I have figured out a few more things. For instance, I can now boot from my USB repair disk. I have managed to install a legal copy of Windows 8.1 and it has been activated. I am currently dealing with the installation of various drivers to make the unit more stable. I will keep you informed about the evolution.

Great! So it sounds like you are well on your way then. Get the drivers all working, you can download anything that Windows doesn't provide as an update automatically from the Acer support site. Once they are up to date and you're getting no complaints from Device Manager have it do all the Windows update it can find. Once they're fully done start the Windows 10 upgrade process. When it's done you'll have about a bazzillion new updates to do again. :)

    Hi Billsey,

I have been so far through hundreds of updates for 8.1. I have created a new repair disk and a system image. I am just about to launch the process of migrating to Windows 10.

Obtaining updates from Acer was not fun at all. I have been forced to selectively execute portions of them in order to obtain the proper results.

Obtaining updates for 8.1 from Microsoft through Windows update was a nightmare but I have managed to go through it.

    I will keep you informed.

    Regards

Please do, I'm hoping the rest won't be quite so ... distasteful. :)

    Well, well, well,

I have downloaded an ISO image of Windows 1903 and burnt it to a DVD. The idea was to migrate from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10. I have read somewhere on the web that you just need to launch the migration as long as you have a valid Windows 8.1 installation. It seems that it is not that simple. At the beginning of the process, I have turned off the option for obtaining updates. The migration process took place up to the point where updates are obtained and applied. This is hapenning towards the end of the migration. As the updates are being performed, it reaches 25% then I get a BSOD about wdf violation, then the computer reboots and falls back to 8.1 with a message saying that Windows10 was not installed 0x8007000A - 0x2000d, failure in phase Safe-OS during Migrate_data operation.

That sometimes happens with filesystem errors. Try a "chkdsk /x /f /r /v C:" from an elevated command prompt (you'll likely have it ask you to reboot in order to complete), it will take a long time...

I have tried the proposed chkdsk but nothing came out of its execution. I have managed to install Windows 10 1903 (clean install) and everything went fine. The upgrade to 1903 kept failing on the same problem even with making an attempt at upgrading to 1809.
The only remaining problem I have now is with the touchscreen. It does not work even after installing the Intel package 1.0.0.1064 W10x86. I remember when replacing the defective board by the new one that the touchscreen was not operational. I thought that it was a question of drivers. Having been through Win 8.1 and now Windows 10 installations, including the Intel package, maybe it's a hardware issue. I will see what will be my next steps.

There are two fairly wide ribbons that connect the touchscreen to the motherboard. You might have an issue with the ribbons, with the display/digitizer or with the motherboard. Of those the only way to test that I can think of is a physical inspection of those two cables. They are bonded to the display, so not replaceable without replacing the whole display/digitizer unit.

I have opened up the unit and checked the 2 ribbons which are as a matter of fact 2 sections of a larger ribbon. I did not see anything wrong. I guess I will have to live with this, which is not the end of the world for what I plan to do with it.

I want to take this opportunity to thank you Billsey for your support.

  • Have you checked the above driver?

  • In this case, colleague billsey may be correct and you should check the touchscreen cables, even if you have said that there is nothing wrong:

Yes, it wouldn't hurt if you're careful to disconnect then reconnect the cable. The connectors have a flip up piece that releases the connection, you can then inspect both sides or the connector to verify there's no cracks visible, then the ribbon slides back into place and you flip the latch back in place. It's a little fidgety, but could potentially fix it if there's a little corrosion...
