Hello,

I just bought an Acer laptop with the model number described in the title, which includes an AMD Ryzen 5 processor. Yesterday I was merely able to setup Windows 10, fully charge the battery, and find out I needed a 16GB USB drive to backup the system.

I was looking forward to install Linux as a second operating system in the 2.5 drive intended for Windows storage (and leave Windows alone in the 128GB M.2 drive), but discovered that the BIOS would not include the 2.5 drive among the bootable devices. Reading about the problem I tried to disable Secure Boot in the BIOS, for which the creation of a BIOS supervisor password was required (which I created), but the option to disable Secure Boot continued to be disabled (regardless of the number of reboot cycles).

The problem now is that the laptop won't boot anymore: not even the Acer logo shows up, only the keyboard lights up! A secondary monitor I tried did no receive any signal either.

Reading the forums I found that the problem (black screen) has happened already with a number of Acer laptops (not only Nitros), so it might be related to something else (other that my attempts to disable secure boot). Is this problem already documented? Is there something I can do to fix it easily? (without opening the machine for example) Or am I better off seeking for a replacement machine? In this latter case I would love to know how to avoid the problem.

Thanks,
Joe.

Don't worry. Actually I am using the Acer Support Chat, and a representative is about to give me a service order so the laptop can be fixed in an authorized service center.

    Thanks,
    Joe.

Hi, I think we have most likely the same issue, I just purchased a Nitro 5 4 days ago, upgraded it with two sticks of 8Gb DDR4 2666Ram and installed an additional storage 256Gb Nvme. clone the os from the preinstalled HDD. everything was working fine. then after shutdown, when I tried to use it at home from the office. It wont turn back on. the keyboard will just light up, but the screen is black (forever) even I have waited long enough. So yesterday, I just returned the unit to Acer store for 7 days warranty immediate replacement. Will know the result today what happened.

Hi, thank you for your response!

I will be able to try that on monday when I get my hands on the machine again, although I am pretty sure I already tried to press F2 just after turning on the laptop. In fact I can not even see the "Acer logo".

    Thanks,
    Joe.

Hi, thank you for your answer.

Indeed it seems we have the same issue, but in your case it did not have to do with Secure Boot, did it? It is a shame a machine so powerful is ultimately so unstable (or so it would seem), and since the issue has been reported for Intel based Nitros it is most likely a motherboard/BIOS problem.

I am kind of reluctant to merely return the machine because I really like it (aside from the aforementioned issue), and if it is a widespread problem, the replacement laptop (same model) would be just as likely to eventually show the "black screen of death". Of course I want it work, so I am looking for a way to fix it (maybe myself, maybe through Acer support) and get rid of the "black screen of death" forever, and only return/replace it if that proves to be impossible.

Please keep me posted on your laptop developments!

    Thanks,
    Joe.

    Hello,

I am happy to announce that I got back my laptop from warranty service with Acer (they took a whole week to fix it), and apparently a BIOS update solved the problem. The guys at the shop claimed that the motherboard had been replaced due to a malfunction, which I doubt since the BIOS is still password-protected, and I noticed the latest BIOS version was installed.

Regardless, I am very happy with the machine, which works very nice with Fedora Linux (once the correct boot parameters are supplied): I kept Windows in the SSD drive, and put Linux in the HDD.

I fully recommend this laptop for Linux: everything works out of the box (WIFI, BT, LAN), as opposed to an HP Omen laptop I had to install Linux last year, which posed a problem to enable every single device on it due to awkward/proprietary OEM choices.

    Thanks,
    Joe.
