Issues rebooting

Hi guys, wondering if anyone could offer some help.

I recently switched from Windows vista to Ubuntu on an OEM Acer aspire laptop. I then decided to switch back to windows as I was having trouble using Ubuntu. Managed to somehow mess the laptop up. When I boot I get a message now that says something about the grub file missing. I also stupidly managed to lose the usb boot of Ubuntu I had. I do have the windows vista cd boot but when I run that from the bios setup I get the message "fail to get disk 0 partition 1 drive letter". Then it restarts. All in all there seems to be no way to get past either of these two screens.

Ultimately I'd like to get back on to windows. Then from there upgrade the vista. Also another issue I was having was finding difficulty upgrading this OEM laptop. It's as if it's limited to vista only!

Any help at all would be widely appreciated. Thanks so much in advance.

What's the full ACER model number? OEM means nothing except that ACER is the Original Equipment Manufacturer which we already know.  :) BTW, upgrading a WinVista era machine to a later Windows version is not particularly easy and activation is definitely not free. You might want to consider installing a friendlier Linux GUI distribution like Mint Cinnamon that can be set up to have about the same look, feel & function of Microsoft's last half-way Windows version, Win7. Ahh i see 😅 thanks for your response. So the model ia MS2264. Prior to being locked out of the laptop back when It was just vista for some reason it wouldn't allow me to update the vista to 7 or 8 through the windows site. Tbh i just really want to get back into it for now.

If you have the WinVista DVD, it should have a menu with other options to get to the command prompt or troubleshooting mode when you try to boot from it. From these modes, we should be able to clear the HDD of Linux remnants that may be preventingthe installation. Check to see if you can get to the command prompt. It will look something like 'X : \ >'. Jack E/NJ
