Acer Swift 3 SF314-54-56L8 - (Part number NX.GXZAA.001 for the technocrats) ... in “Sparkly Silver”... BIOS update 1.14 released on 2019-04-17.

https://www.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/support-product/7581?b=1

Do I need it, and why?

BIOS
Optimizes BIOS setting for Optane system
Date: 2019/04/17
Version: 1.14
Vendor:Acer
Size: 6.2 MB

Can someone (of authority) please confirm the
1) Quantity of operable memory ports on the KBL Strongbow_KL motherboard for my device?
2) That the installed Primary SSD occupies the only M.2 slot and
3) The primary SSD M.2 slot supports only SATA III and does NOT support PCIe (Nvme) and
4) There is no PCIe NVMe M.2 compatible port on the motherboard... therefore
5) My SF314-54-56L8 does not need the update because installing optane hardware is impossible because optane needs PCIe lanes to function.

OR

6)Is #2 wrong and the factory SSD is a mSata drive slotted in an M2 PCIe Port?
....Meaning I should start saving for a 1Tb stick of Intel H10 or [insert NVMe product here] and install the new Bios? (::Fiendishly rubs palms together::)

The information available for this model is unclear at best. Crucial “guarantees” their NVMe SSD will work as an upgrade for me:  https://www.crucial.com/usa/en/compatible-upgrade-for/Acer/sf314-54-56l8#SSDFilters

Do not respond without citing your answer with a link or reference.  Please do not try to solve a problem I haven't described or make “suggestions”.
Do not say “some” models shipped with optane but “others” didnt.  Reference model numbers and a source others can verify too, please.  Im interested in technical details about the full memory capability of this motherboard.

No, I have not disassembled the machine.  Yes I have searched the motherboard online.  Yes I have looked up repair guides and just about every youtube video with english titles and descriptions yet with voiceovers in Hindi.  (A cruel punishment)

A basic photo of the motherboard with arrows pointing at things you stick hard drives to with just a little description would solve everything. Done correctly, it would even bridge language barriers. ❤️

Thank you so much!  Im excited to get find more tech info!

    Good night HackInTheBox !

First understand that here is an open collaborative forum for Acer users and enthusiasts.
If you want detail strictly technical, I suggest you search directly with the Acer support of your country.

In addition, understand that YES, there are several models of this series, some of which have hardware characteristics that others do not have.

So the ideal is that YES, open your machine and check directly the most of the information you are looking for.

Anyway, see if the information below will help you in any way:

Is this your EXACT model ? _> https://www.acer.com/datasheets/2018/4876/SF314-54/NX.GXZAA.001.html

Based on database information, this model has only one M.2 2280 slot with support for either Sata 3 or PCIe NVMe Gen 3x4 or Optane Gen 3x2 and has been tested by Acer SSDs of up to 512Gb.

Yes the link and model number is my exact model https://www.acer.com/datasheets/2018/4876/SF314-54/NX.GXZAA.001.html#_ga=2.38506147.186582492.1555370846-1550713752.1555168971

I can also confirm the SSD shiped in my unit as a Hynix brand 256Gb

So, in the future… The correct way to read the above data sheet is to take the part number of the SSD identified in your drivers ( or whatever relevant part you’re looking for)...  find it on the data sheet,  and then see what group(s) it belongs to ..?

For example I have the HFS256Gxxxxx drive.   When I locate it on the matrix it’s in the column that identifies it as belonging to a PCIe configuration.

That’s really great news actually.   It’s very confusing though considering it’s a mSata Drive that comes with it!

     Now here’s the question though:
I know It can support an additional 2.5 inch sata SSD.  Thats confirmed now, too.

Any idea whats meant by the optional 2nd HDD?  They cant possibly mean a THIRD drive... can they?   Of course it would never fit inside the body of such a thin machine ...

... unless you had an adapter for a 3rd sata m.2 ssd....

The ideal in such cases is to use software that identifies the hardware completely, such as HWINFO64 or AIDA64.
That's because in the assembly of the equipment, Acer previously acquired several batches of hardware from different companies.
    So for example:
The same model laptop that report having 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD.
This RAM can be of several brands, have frequency within the supported (2133 or 2400 for example), or even come 2 4Gb combs instead of 1 of 8Gb and the SSD can be of several brands.
Only High Performance and Gamers equipment has exact hardware specified.

As I told you, this laptop computer from Acer has several models with internal differences between them.
But the service manual is basic for everyone.
Then that 2nd optional can be as much an extra Sata slot as just indicating that the standard slot can be replaced by another HDD.

By manual, your exact model only comes with a M.2 slot and a standard Sata for hard drives.
