Predator G3-710 CPU Fan rarely starts, and runs for only like a minute. Heat Issues

So ive noticed over the last few weeks the CPU fan is turning on less and less frequently in my system, and decided to check the temps.  Turns out my system is idling at 65+ and hits 100 often, without the fan turning on.  The fan only turns on on the occasions that it does for a min or two and then totally stops spinning.  Tried turning off Smart Fan in BIOS, and got it to spin at 4500 RPM for a short while, and then it turns itself off again.  Tried Argotronics, and while the curve seems to work while the fan is spinning, but it will start and stop randomly, ignoring the temp settings it seems.  Ive heard these PCs have head issues, but these numbers seem excessive.

CPU running at less then 30% at 100 temp without a fan doesn't seem good for the life of the system, and even in older games, (such as dota 2) leads to gameplay lag.  Shouldn't be happening on the system i got.  If i super stress the system with like a CPU Stress test i can make the fan turn on and stay on, but the consistently high temps have me worried.

I also put in a new 1tb HD in the included expansion slot.

I did have a problem not long after i purchased it with flashing the bios bricking the system so i sent it in to get it serviced and thus i now ended up with a different bios (R02.B0). 

Anything I can do to solve this?  Or should i just turn smart fan back on a keep my fingers crossed?

  • Did your desktop come with firmware R02.A0 and then upgraded to R02.B0 by Acer technical support? With the previous version of uefi, did this problem occur?

    Honestly i do not know what the previous version was.  I tried to update the bios via the Acer Care Center, so i suspect that the upgrade that messed up the system was an upgrade TO R02.A2, due to my system being an i7-7700.  It didn't have this issue before, but that was months ago, and i dont recall having any issues, but it is possible that it is only becoming noticeable due to the ambient temperature is going up due to the weather change.
  • Have you tried upgrading uefi (bios) to the latest version?

    I am very hesitant as im not sure what the latest version is.  I am already on a BIOS i cannot find any information about for a board that isnt supposed to be supported, and the upgrade messed up my system the first time.  The newest for the Predator Desktop series is R0A.02 i believe, and i cannot find any information on R02.B0 anywhere.

    Also forgot to note, the update also fails when attempted through the acer care center, which attempts to update to RO2.A2
  • If the bios is in the r02-b0 version, you can upgrade to the r02-b2 version! However, I'm not sure if this update will solve the problem! Did the service center switch the motherboard from the desktop and so came up with a different version of bios?

    There was no information about the motherboard being changed.  CPU-Z is saying the motherboard is G6-710(kbl), but the PC i bought was a G3, so i dont know if it was changed or not.
  • Checking the service manual, the g3-710 motherboard comes with the b150 chipset. The motherboard of the g6-710, come with the z170 chipset! Check here:

    Serial Number Checker says the product name is Predator G3-710.

    Device Manager is saying chipset B150.  However CPU-Z is calling it a G6-710(kbl).  Possibly related to having the wrong BIOS?
  • I think cpuz is wrong! Check the model in the bios information section! Also, have you checked by pressing f9 to restore the bios and then f10 to save on exit, if it solves the fans problem?

    Attempted to restore BIOS defaults, havent seen any changes at all.  Production Name in BIOS says G3-710.  Same cycle of like 10-15 min heat gradually rises from 65+ to 100, fan comes on for max 2 min and temp drops down to 65+, even on a light to no load.  I can spike the temp and keep the fan there by stressing the precessor, but then the fan only works at max, which isnt good for it either i think.
  • The only option I think can solve the problem, would be a possible update of the bios! But it is an extremely risky procedure!

    Is there a way I can reset my BIOS if something goes wrong with the update?
  • Only through the process called recovery-crisis, which can only be done by the Acer service center!

    So since i'm out of warranty, i guess im SOL then.  Probably just be cheaper to replace the whole mainboard with a different model and CPU Fan?
  • How long ago did you perform the repair at the Acer service center? I still think a bios update might solve the problem!

    Around the end of last year.  My warranty just expired in the middle of february.
  • I can not check any other alternative, there is not a bios update! Bios is the one who controls the temperature and the fans on desktops and notebooks! Now, you could ask Acer technical support, the warranty period after the desktop has been repaired, even if the warranty has already finished!

    How could i contact technical support without a warranty?  It seems the only options are paid for, in the 200 dollar range, which i could easily get a new board and CPU cooler for and do the replacement myself.

    However, I would like what is the maximum temperature that has been reached in the processor and on the video card! When the cooler stops, it does not mean that it is in trouble. It is possible that the fan will only be activated when it reaches a certain temperature!
