Why is my laptop display compressed, with thick black bars at the side of the screen?

There have been no issues before this but this morning, I turned my laptop on and the display is more or less compressed into the middle of the screen, with thick black bars to either side.  At each side, the unused space is approximately 2 inches, top to bottom.  The fonts and icons are much bigger than they usually are.
I bought my Acer new, a few years ago.  I'm running Windows 10.

Under advanced display settings, the screen resolution is 640x480.

What exact model of your laptop?
    Update your video drivers first.
Change the resolution to native resolution, probably 1366x768 or 1920x1080
