Need help rebuilding a Nitro 5 after drive failure

I have a less than one year old Nitro 5 that well let's just say a family member let their anti virus subscription lapse and I'm pretty sure a virus wiped out both the 256GB PCI express C drive as well as a 500GB sata SSD D drive, I had installed in the sata expansion bay. System is stuck in a boot loop. Tried booting from a USB and running repair/diagnostics to no avail. Both drives show no data on them and trying to format either of them fails with an error they are corrupted. I have a brand new 1 TB Samsung EVO SATA SSD. My question is... can I completely remove the PCIe drive and Sata drive (that I think are infected) and install the Samsung EVO, load windows on to it and use only the new sata drive? (in other words can I run this computer with only a sata drive and nothing in the PCIe slot?) Also, I don't seem to have any Windows 10 serial number of certificate with the paper work for this computer. Can I call Acer support and "reclaim" my windows license? I am hoping that I don't need to buy Windows 10 again. Thanks in advance for any help.

  • Hello! What is the exact model of your notebook? Example an515-51-75kz! Have you tried to do a complete formatting on those drives that you said are virus-free?

The Win10 OEM license is on the mainboard, no longer on the HDD or SSD. You have the option of downloading and installing a free generic Win10 version from Microsoft using its USB installation tool https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 but would likely have to download ACER specific drivers for devices that don't seem to run correctly https://www.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/drivers . You also have the option of buying the ACER-flavored OEM Win10 USB stick with all the drivers needed for about $50 based on your machine's serial number id(SNID) from the ACER store  https://store.acer.com/en-us/extended/recovery/ . The final option is probably do-able through a warranty repair if indeed the machine is less than a year old. https://www.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/support  Jack E/NJ

Thank you Jack. Very helpful info. I'm going to order the Acer Win 10 stick as I've been through driver hell before and that's a no brainer for $50. One follow up question if you see this. Any thoughts on running my machine with just a sata drive? (i.e. I'll remove the PCIe that shipped with my computer and install only a sata drive in the expansion bay, load win 10 on it with the stick I get from acer and hopefully be back in business). I'm trying to get this done as quickly as possible (that's why I chose not to send it back for warranty repair) as it's my nephew's computer for school and if I can fix it in days as opposed to weeks that's better for him.

Hello egydiocoelho the model is an AN515-53-55G9. I am certain that the PCIe drive that shipped with my computer as well as a sata 3 drive I installed in the expansion bay were infected. Neither will format. My question is, can I run with just a sata 3 drive (and nothing in the PCIe slot) as I have a brand new Samsung I could use.
  • Yes you can! However I believe it will be necessary to change the sata mode in bios to ahci mode!

Hold on. What is the SATA mode now in the BIOS? Some of them shipped with a RAID setup. Jack E/NJ

Thank You JackE, I will have to check when I get home and can get into the BIOS. I'm certain it's not RAID. I had installed a sata drive in the expansion bay and it worked fine until the computer got infected. I also just ordered a 256GB PCIe SSD. I'll replace it, use the ACER win 10 stick to reload windows and my drivers and get the machine working again. I can then add my 1tb sata into the expansion bay only after I'm certain everything is working.
