Predator Helios 500 PH517-61

Ryzen 2700
Vega 56

No matter what I run the GPU clocks are always 800 core and 500 memory.
Any suggestions?

Playing on battery? GPU gets limited performance when on battery.

Have you checked you power settings? Change them to performance if they aren't already.

Frankcastlestein thanks for the response but yes I tried with both balanced and high performance.

I use GPU Z to watch and log GPU functions.

Post that please. Or install MSI Afterburner or any tool that allows plotting this graph. The more descriptive you are, the higher the chances of getting this issue resolved sooner.

@scavengers GPU-z its not a real time monitoring software its most basically to let you know the values and models of some of the components this said use either hw monitor of afterburner to give you a realtime graphic of what is going on and post the results

What are you playing? You can lock them using wattman, which requires unlocking overclocking using afterburner, but I've found it does nothing.   If gpu clocks are low it's due to low utilization.  800/500 is indicating it's under 50%utilization.

Run balanced performance plan only on ryzen, high performance locks the cpu to all core boost and hurts performance in most games as the cpu will boost higher at lower core loads in balanced.  All core boost is 3.4ish ghz, where it can single core boost to 4.1ghz, that's a huge performance loss in games that are not well threaded.

Sorry so long since I posted here folks. I am sad to tell you my dog died suddenly last friday so, things have been a bit low for a while.
Im going to start working on this now and will post back with results soon.

    Thanks sri369.

So here is an update. I installed the graphics drivers from the AMD site and that was a huge step forward.
More demanding games will now push my graphics card at or near my settings.

But benchmark programs are still not hitting it.
Furmark can only push the graphics card to 805/500 and Unigine can only push the engine to 1050 mhz but memory tops out at my settings of 850 mhz.

One thing... bench marking only pushes to limits... and doesn't always mean it is good. For example, if i push my windows to performance mode it pushes most benchmarks to stellar performance (look at the link in my signature for one such result), but, in reality, do i need that kind of performance? the short answer is no. I tuned my system to be balanced - lazy cpu ramping n such. this allows my system to live longer than leave at peak for a short duration.

Go play a game n see how it performs. Are you seeing any performance hits?

Did you try installing MSI Afterburner n checking your graphics card performance in that?

Yes I installed Afterburner to OC the graphics card. Thing is benching programs are supposed to push to limits yes but all I get on the laptop in Furmark is 805/500. If i run Furmark on my self built desktop (i7 8700k @ 4.9 GHZ AND 2 1070's in SLI) it pegs the graphics cards to max in single or SLI.

And check this out. Far Cry 5 only pushes the Vega 56 to 1100 mhz max. Kingdom Come Deliverance peaks at 1125 mhz, but Sniper Elite Zombie Army pegs the engine clock at 1365 mhz, which is my setting in Afterburner. Im going to check out a few more things but Im getting ready to pin this as a driver issue.

Have u tried 3dmark just to see if it does the same  and by the way are your games fps ok or they have low fps and are unplayable anyway just wondering i dont have a vega but u might wnat to give a read here with similat issues seems the voltage needs to be increased

Hey brother Im going to run 3dmark later tonight or tomorrow. And as far as the game play it is excellent. But with this small issue it looks like benchmarking is kinda pointless if the gpu wont run at max speed.

And thanks for the link. Im going to check it out.

if the games run excellent dont worry about any benchmark just enjoy it :) it could be an issue if the games would run bad or wouldnt even run but doesnt seem to be the issue here :)

"AMD Ryzen 7 2700 Desktop Processor, AMD Radeon RX Vega 56 Graphics"

This is the description on the Amazon website of this laptop. I installed and used a number of monitoring programs while I was looking for a answer to the problem I was having that I listed above.
Finally something caught my eye. Every program I used reported power consumption of 120 watts.
Issue solved. Acer listed the GPU as "AMD Radeon RX Vega 56". The gpu is actually a AMD Radeon RX Vega 56 Mobile.
The desktop Vega 56 is rated at 210 watts, while the mobile part is listed at 120 watts.

Never would I even have considered buying a near $2000 laptop that would sometimes perform below the GTX 1060. And mine does.
Last for now. Im guessing that this is why that Acer's own store page lists nothing as far as the Video card in this $2000 laptop:
