Try using a live cd of ubuntu but in a usb drive. For this you will need to press f2(or another key, it depends) repeatedly as soon as you press the power button of your laptop and navigate using the arrow keys to boot (or similar) then choose boot order (or similar) and press enter, and follow the instructions on screen to change the boot order so that windows boot manager is below usb hdd (or key or drive) then press esc and then navigate to the last menu and select save changes and reboot (or similar) and press enter.
Use rufus to create a bootable usb drive. Download the ubuntu iso from their website (you need a usb drive with at least 4gb of capacity) then make a backup of everything you have on your usb drive (this is mandatory, as rufus will delete all data on your drive) then download rufus from their website and open it. Then choose your ubuntu iso file and click on start (do not mess with anything else) and click yes or ok on all the prompts that follow (remember, rufus will delete all data on your usb drive!) And wait for it to finish. Then shut down your laptop and insert your usb drive onto it. Power on your laptop and you should have a prompt with several options, choose the first one, that says try ubuntu without installing it. Try to use ubuntu for several hours and if it doesn't freeze then it could be windows or a dying hdd. Also, check if you have any corrupted or missing files or files with the wrong name or filename extension.
