GPU - driver/power supply problem?

Hi,
I have an Acer Aspire V3-771G, with two internal hard drives (one of which is an SSD) and two graphic cards, one is a Intel 4000 the other one NVidia GeForce GT 650M.
A few days ago my internal hard drive failed and I had to reinstall Windows. I never created a recovery disk or flash drive (or couldn't find it at least), so I had to install Windows 8.1 from microsoft directly. I check the Acer driver help page for the right drivers to install: https://www.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/support-product/4090?b=1&pn=NX.M1WEG.067 and installed most of them now (not sure about all the touchpad-drivers). I installed the NVidia driver listed there and then used the Nvidia tools to update to the most recent drivers. Anyways, it seems that the performance is worse now than what it was before, but the big problem is that starting a more graphic intensive game I experience the system beep and screen dimming I otherwise get when I unplug the laptop (when it's switching to battery) and then the battery is actually drained even though the laptop is plugged in. The GeForce tools show that its the Geforce card that is active and I never had this problem before reinstalling windows.

Has anyone heard of this issue before or has any ideas on where to start troubleshooting it?

What driver nvidia version number is on there now? Do you recall what was on it before the crash? Jack E/NJ

No, unfortunately I don't know what driver version I was on before. But I did update them occasionally, so could have been 6 months or a year old.
After the reinstall I updated to GeForce Game Ready 347.25 and already had the problem, then I updated to 417.xx . Since this didn't solve the problem I just now used DDU to remove the drivers and then installed only the drivers from the above linked acer support site. I first installed the intel driver and then the Nvidia, and the currently installed version (of the geforce driver) is 326.49 and unfortunately that didn't fix the problem

Your model was a transitional Windows laptop. Do you recall if the original factory-installed Windows was Win8x or Win7? Jack E/NJ

It came with Windows 8 installed. That's also what the sticker on the back says.
If there is a way to get it back to the factory version that would have to fix it I am assuming, but I couldn't figure out how to do that (since I didn't create a recovery disk :anguished: )

There is if you're in the US or CAN. Recovery stick or disc for about $50 based on your machine's serial number id(SNID) from either the US or CAN on-line stores. https://store.acer.com/en-us/extended/recovery/ or https://store.acer.com/en-ca/extended/recovery/ Jack E/NJ

Thank you for your help! But $50? Wow, that is a kinda outrageous price Acer charges for something I basically already paid for. Anyways, it doesn't work, I am in the US, but my laptop was bought in Europa, so that's probably why.

Yes, the generic Microsoft Win8.1 installation version may have different system files, not only different device drivers, than the ACER-flavored Win8.1 installation version. For situations like this, some folks have reported good results with iobit's driver booster freeware in resolving these driver issues. You might want to consider giving it a whirl. https://www.iobit.com/en/driver-booster.php  Jack E/NJ
