How can I replace my hard drive?

I just bought an Aspire ATC-885 which has a 1Tb drive as standard. I bought a 3Tb drive at the same time thinking as it was a midi size case it would be easy to install a second drive - wrong. Searching the net I have found that you can't have two 3.5" drives. Can I just swap the drives? Of course the computer doesn't come with OS media but I can make a recovery disk on a USB stick but will I be able to re-install windows 10 using this? Sorry for the stupid question but we've been using macs for a few years.

The desktop has several SATA entries, see:

It also has several power connections:

You can use the dvd-room power connection! In this case you will have the two hd's connected and this way you can do the cloning!

  • As you bought a desktop hd, I suggest that you use the migrate feature of the minitool partition so that you clone the old hd to the new one! That way, the entire operating system will be cloned into the new hd, without the need to reinstall the operating system!

How do I do that if I can't connect the new drive without removing the original one?

Just check the SATA ports on your motherboard. In general, there are several SATA ports on the motherboard of desktop computer. But if it indeed just has one SATA port, you need to purchase a SATA-to-USB adapter (from several to dozens of dollars), and use it to convert the disk to a USB drive. Then, you are able to connect both disks and migrate OS to the USB-connected drive. Once the migration is done, connect the target disk internally. Done.
