Lots of threads mentioning Samsung drives. Thought it'd be a good idea to have a main thread for that.

I'm thinking about getting two EVO 2TB drives and running them in RAID1 under a fresh install of Linux. Any reason why that might not work?

Don't see any reason why this would not work. Make sure to switch to AHCI and use mdadm to manage the RAID array. Intel RAID within the bios is crappy software raid and should be avoided at all costs.

I just got 500GB EVO 970. Will be cloning my OS to it today, should I change it to AHCI too or its only good when you use both m.2 slots? Now it's set to smth premium optane I beviele.

Few days with my EVO 970 and I'am rly disappointed. The temps are so bad that my left side of laptop becomes worm that I can feel it while gaming, when using wasd keys. Aida64 shows 60-66 C just by running windows10... is this normal?

Now it's at first slot of m.2 might move it more to the left of the laptop, also I ordered Arctic Thermal Pad 50 x 50 x 1.5 mm ACTPD00003A acording to this guide http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/applying-thermal-pads-on-ssd-and-ram.789398/ it should reduce temp by a lot. So I plan to add x2 1.5mm thermal pads at the bottom of ssd and replace the stock ones on the m.2 heat-sink. Rly hopping this helps. Not a fan of warm left side laptop. Upping the fans helps, now they are on auto mode without coolboost so they are kinda low and I like it a lot.

    Hi,

I have also installed a 256GB Samsung 970 Evo NVMe, and mine stays at 32°C (room temperature is at 20°C) but running on Ubuntu Linux.

I have only experience with the NVME drive that came with my Helios 500 but I would not expect any storage device to output a significant amount of heat like that any more than I'd expect RAM modules to overheat a system. My gut instinct is that something is wrong. The temps you are reporting, are those CPU temps? While I would not expect the drives themselves to output a lot of heat, I suppose it's possible that poorly written *drivers* for the drives could cause the CPU to run hot. Will be paying attention to the development of your story. Thank you.

Ok so moved it to slot 2 added those thermal pads on top and bottom of SSD (sandwich stile) and cleaned the metal plate that covers those m.2 ssd, it had few finger smudges on it. Now tems are 55-60. Not a big deal but I don't feel that ssd so much. Left side is much warmer then the right but it's better now.

Installed Samsung magician and this is what I see :(
Not supported? I did a clone from sata 128GB ssd to 970 evo with Samsung migration tool it was rly easy.

Would it be best to try a clean windows 10 installation with AHCI mode ?

ok, now I cant even install Samsung_NVM_Express_Driver_3.0.exe i get error saying:

So basically this confirms that it's windows+driver problem? Also Samsung driver manual say that you must to have Samsung NVMe Controller in Device manager at Storage controllers. All i have is this:

Also Samsung 970 EVO drivers are from 2006 by Microsoft. This must be the problem.

    Microsoft plans 20 years ahead!

Seems like something is seriously wrong. I would be considering a fresh install if you cannot figure it out in the hopes that that fixes it. I would think and hope that none of that thermal stuff you are doing should be necessary.

    Good luck.

Update after fresh win10 installation also before doing that I changed sata mode to AHCI. Temps are 42-44 when browsing, max 60 when doing the test and Samsung magician detected the drive so problem is solved was, over thinking too much and ordered thermal pads before even checking software problems. Now PC is so smooth and even fans turn off more often, all of this with stock voltage. Anyone that want to use Samsung 970 imo should change sata to AHCI.
