Hello!
I want to upgrade my 5742ZG to get max performance possible. What can I do to get best performance?
1. Change HDD to SSD ✓
2. Install lightweight OS (I've installed Debian with PIXEL) ✓
3. More RAM (?)

You can have up to 8GB DDR3L RAM (2x4GB module 1.35 volt 1.6GHz or greater) which should help speed but not as much as the SSD. You might also be able to upgrade to a faster CPU with the same pin format. Jack E/NJ

The biggest upgrade bang for the money is with an SSD. Go to crucial dot com for specs on suitable upgrades. Jack E/NJ

    So...
Can I upgrade RAM to 8 GB and CPU to Intel Core i5-580M (of course I'll install newest BIOS) and will it (probably) work (Debian Stretch)?

You should be able to run 8GB RAM. But to be sure, go to crucial dot com. Download and run their scanner for an analysis of your system. You don't have to buy from them just get the specs. But they do guarantee what you buy from them will work. The cpu's pga socket should be compatible with the i5 but 3 different but similar mainboards were used in this series. My advice is to make sure you can return the i5 to the vendor for a refund if the existing BIOS doesn't recognize it. I would not try to update the BIOS firmware to try to accomodate the i5 because the risk of bricking the machine is too high. Jack E/NJ

If you can't run the scanner, the crucial specs for the Aspire 5742z should be OK. Jack E/NJ
