Hi Gang

Bought 'previously owned' Aspire One 722 0879 - Would like to replace the 5400 RPM HD. Looking for least PROBLEMATIC method: Buy NEW ligitimate Product Key (with full Windows 7 Premium Install) or use existing Microsoft Product Key? Buy OS on Thumb Drive (or) DVD using external drive? Where/how do I get neccessary drivers? Thank You!

    Suggestions:
    1) Factory reset as explained here.
    2) After personalizations, create a system image with Macrium Reflect.
    3) Install new HDD & recover system image.
If you have any concerns that there may be some little piece of malware buried deep in the device, then make note of the Windows 7 key & install a fresh copy on the new HDD.

Hello 'wis' very nice to hear from you! ;)  Since I bought this Acer from a stranger I'd like to install a fresh copy. In fact I was thinking of trying to buy a THUMBNAIL copy of Windows 7 Premium, no DVD necessary, no internet connection neccessary, (no risks of connection faliure). Do you know where I might buy a reliable 'Flash Drive' version of Windows 7 Premium (with Product Key)? Would I then have to install neccesary drivers from here: https://www.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/support-product/3658?b=1   Thank You again 'wis' :)

You can reset the machine to an ACER factory-fresh Win7 state by using the ALT+F10 cold boot method after making sure your disk to disk (D2D) recovery option is enabled in the BIOS as shown in the video below.

To get started, turn the machine off. Then turn it back on and immediately start tapping the F2 key to enter the BIOS menu. In the BIOS Main tab, make sure D2D is enabled. Then press F10key to save BIOS settings and exit. Cold reboot the computer and  immediately press and hold the ALTkey while tapping the F10. You will be presented with recovery menu from a hidden recovery partition to completely erase the drive and re-install a fresh ACER-flavored Win7 system with all the correct drivers for your machine.

Once installed, you can either clone the old HDD onto a  new SSD through a USB port with a USB-to-SATA cable adapter (less than $10 Amazon). Or you can make an image of the HDD  on a 16GB USB stick then replace the HDD with the SSD and restore the image on the SSD with the USB stick. You can use freeware versions of Macrium as @wis mentioned above or AOMEI backup to do the cloning or imaging.

    Howdy.
Great username.  If it has something to do with Alan Turing & you are a British subject, you must be very proud of that legacy.  Liberal democracies are forever in his debt.  If you are German, sorry; but everything worked out in end (Marshall Plan).
Acer One 722 laptops came pre-installed with either Premium or Professional.  Here is how to find out which version you have. At this point, no reason to spend £30. Better to donate it to your favorite charity.  If you insist upon contributing to the British economy, we'll provide more suggestions later on.

To muddy the waters a bit, if you have Windows 7 Professional; there is a possibility of a free Windows 10 upgrade.  My personal preference is Windows 7, but its end-of-life support is Jan. 14, 2020, which is a little over a year away.

And the end of life support for the latest major version of Win10 1809 is precisely April 14, 2020 --- if 1809 can even be made to work properly on an AO722. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/13853/windows-lifecycle-fact-sheet

Stay with Win7. After that, you can switch to LinuxMint which even now can be configured with about the same look, feel & operation of the last halfway decent Windows version.

Sent from my AO722 still running Win7HP along with WinXP, Win98SE & SuSE Linux as VMWare guests. :)

My Good Friends: JackE & wis (can't thank you guys enough for jumping right in!)

Wish I were British (proudly American) :) but very familiar with the entire story about Bletchley Park and the inventions of Alan Turing. We might not be here chatting if it weren't for him. ;)

    Here's an update for everyone:
Have determined this Acer 722 has W7 Home Premium. Have verified the previous owner replaced the Keyboard and upgraded RAM to 4GB. Have determined the Bios will recognize (1st at the top) and Boot to a Flash Drive I just aquired which contains a Fresh Install of W7 Home Premium. Will remove the old system drive and replace it with a new SSD drive 230GB. Will use the existing Microsoft Product Key for the O.S. Will hopefully format the new drive (and unless I'm missing something), will download neccesary divers for 64 bit from here: https://www.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/support-product/3658?b=1 JackE thank you for the Video!

Feel free to jump in! B)

    Thank You!

If it were mine, I'd probably re-set the existing HDD from the hidden recovery partition because it will have all the Win7 drivers already installed. Then create a system image onto a USB stick using Macrium or AOMEI freeware. Then exchange the HDD for the SSD and simply restore the image from the stick to the SSD. But a generic Win7 stick should work too but probably have to install ACER-flavored drivers afterwards. Good luck either way. Jack E/NJ

Windows 7 is superior to Windows 10, which is a resource hog & personal data vacuum cleaner, if the defaults are not changed.
Linux Mint is exceptionally stable & open source; therefore you may never have to pay another nickel to Microsoft.  Installing it should be straightforward on a Windows 7 machine; unlike the newer models in which UEFI has replaced BIOS.
There are a few downsides to Linux Mint.  TurboTax/TaxAct desktop version is not supported.  Using WINE is not reliable (we want reliable when doing our taxes).  Unless your printer is on the Ubuntu list, installing Linux drivers is not that easy & getting it to work wirelessly may not happen.
But Linux Mint installation is a topic for another day & another thread.

Hi JackE - sorry I'm disabled and prob hit the wrong key?
Thanks again for everything JackE and wis - My apologies I should have mentioned I was trying to avoid 'unnecessary bundled software' thus going for a fresh install bare bones only. No worries the flash drive with OS was only $20 from reliable local pro computer store. If I go with fresh install is the App called:  'HWVendorDetection' designed for 'direct path' to each device requiring correct driver? Worth using it? Or should I load drivers manually using Device Manager? Are any of those divers from Acer unnecessary?  I've 'formatted' before - Thanks again Guys ..
BTW I never considered W10 - (for all the reasons wis stated LOL)

As long as you have the ACER-flavored Win7 installation flash drive, I'd use it. You can always uninstall ACER bloatware you don't want or need a lot easier than finding the finding all the right ACER-flavored drivers which may or may not be the same as the generic vendor versions. Good luck whatever you decide. Jack E/NJ

    Thanks JackE
One more thing: should I install the App 'HWVendorDetection' off the web site? Is it helpful installing the divers? Wordage from the support web site: "You can download Acer Software to detect your hardware and choose the right drivers"

Unless they are hiding in plain sight, the Aspire One 722 drivers from the official Acer download site are not available.  Bad idea to use non-official sites.
If Acer has "cleaned house" & removed the old drivers from their website, it's more efficient to use the Acer drivers shipped with the device than go on a wild goose chase for individual drivers.
    Suggestions:
    1) do a factory reset (Alt + F10, not the $20 USB).
    2) personalize.
    3) create system image with Macrium.
    4) Control Panel->Programs & uninstall what you think is extraneous.  If you delete essential applications accidentally, you have the system image as a fall-back.
    5) when you are happy with "lean & trim", create a 2nd system image for recover to the SSD.

In case we're not aware of the circumstances, here's the Aspire link which provides the drivers: https://www.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/support-product/3658?b=1 < Look Ligit?

JackE & wis thanks again for your patience and expertise - The fresh install was successful, smooth and simple! No Bundled Software! Unless I'm missing something, the only thing remaining is installing the correct ethernet drivers, (as indicated in the Device Manager). Its a wonderful thing when you see 'zero items' in the control or start up list.
