Reinstalled Windows on my Acer laptop to see whether it would improve the overall laptop with no bloatware and etc. And this caused the trackpad to stop working. I think it is a driver issue but not entirely sure. Updated Windows 10, tried installing the driver, if I go into device manager no pointing devices other than my wireless mouse! Help!

and is the wireless mouse working okay?  If so, does removing the dongle and doing a scan for hardware in device manager then find the touchpad? (also, is there a reference to the pad under "other devices"? windows puts stuff there when its not got the correct driver etc for the hardware or it automatically installed the wrong driver when windows was installed)

Try this simple step and check

power drain: Just check the back of the unit, you can find a pin hole , unplug the charger and turn off the unit. now put a paper clip in the small pin hole and press and hold it for 30 sec.
BIOS default: After power drain is done, power on the u nit, but as soon as you power on the unit keep pressing the F2 key so that it take you to BIOS page. Press F9 and press Enter than press F10 and press Enter. the unit will restart

Wireless mouse works fine. Tried doing this but there is no devices detected as shown by this. Most of the HID stuff is with the wireless mouse. There is no trackpad. Really screwed myself up this time

    Do these 2 things:

    1. Change trackpad settings in bios to basic
    2. Press Fn and f7 function key together. (after booting into windows)

    Let me know the results.

im having this exact issue  on an acer aspire Es1-512-c50s laptop. i upgraded it from windows 8.1 to windows 10 professional and now the trackpad/mousepad doesnt work. ive downloaded and reinstalled the driver for it from the Acer website, restarted it, tried the fn/f7 thing and nothing. i did change the bit about the mouse from advanced to basic, restarted, then back to default, it worked for a minute, then restarted and im now back to it not working. please help as using a USB mouse is a pain and im upgrading the machine for a friend, its not my machine so i need to get it sorted.

i also need to shut off the pin etc so i can just hit enter etc and it log in automatically if possible.

    Thanks in advance

Ok, boot the laptop from the windows recovery USB (drive format should be fat 32) and check whether you get the mouse working when the recovery/installation screen for windows 10 loads up. Remember to have the track pad setting to Basic in Bios. If you get your trackpad working there, you will need to reinstall windows. Alternatively ,You can also load ubuntu from a usb drive (fat 32) and load ubuntu from the USB itself. If you have your trackpad working then you know the trackpad is fine and you need to do a complete re-install. Remember, keep the trackpad at basic mode in Bios and save and exit from Bios. Don't load defaults in Bios.
  • @niku55 e @turbopete! What is the error shown in the i2c hd device driver? Can you copy the idhardware here?

I fixed this issue by downloading Serial IO driver from my laptops driver page and then installed the driver and then booted into the BIOS and changed the trackpad from advanced to basic and then booted into windows and it worked. Then I just went back into bios and changed it back to advanced and it works perfectly for me now!
