Aspire 5315, multiple problems

I have an older AS5315 that has multiple problems:
1. When plugged-in with the AC adapter, the connection is intermittent, at best (have to 'wiggle' the plug gently to get it to connect and even then, it's hard to get the plug to stay in the 'correct' position long enough to power the laptop).  Battery light flashes amber (does this by itself mean anything?) along with the main power light (stays steady amber).  I'm suspecting a battery/charging circuit issue here.  Might have to replace the power receptacle.  Takes several days of this (solid amber main power light and flashing amber battery light) for them to show 'green' statuses and if the computer is jarred/moved even slightly, then everything resets to flashing again.
2. Going to have to replace the HDD - ran a diagnostic disc (only way the computer would boot up after I went into the BIOS and changed the boot order to boot from CD) and every sector it scanned (all of them!) showed as bad.  Original OS was Windows Vista (disc ordered).

This is a nice laptop and I'd like to continue using it - yes, I know I could easily buy something more up-to-date (currently using a Win 10 machine for this), but I like having several OSs available, especially since I use the BOINC program for SETI@home (can also be used for other projects as well, but I like SETI).  I also use it for several of my Amateur Radio programs.

    Have you tried checking with another power source, ram and other hd? Ever check if disconnecting the battery the problem remains?

    Yes, and got the same results.  Received the new HDD today and will be installing it (and Win Vista Home Premium) later.  Will let you know what happens.

    Not solved.  Would like to know if the flashing battery light (with the steady main power light, both amber) means, if anything.

    The ideal would be to test by removing the hardware one by one! First unplug the battery and plug the notebook into power only (no problem doing this); then remove the memories and check for any rust in the slots and rams memories! Go testing each hardware separately!
    About the light is blinking in amber, I do not know exactly what it means, as I can not find the service guide for this model, but it is very likely that hardware is in trouble!
    Does the computer have an image? Did you test with another power adapter?

    I tested with another power adapter, and got the same results, like I said before.  Will attempt your suggestion about removing the battery and trying again as well as the RAM slots (the computer was in a storage unit for several months in a high humidity environment, so that might be one possibility).

    I've asked this before, but does having the main power light steady amber and the battery light flashing at the same time (without powering on) mean anything?  Occasionally, the power light will be off and the battery light on briefly, then starts flashing (amber), then after a short time, the main power light comes on steady and the battery light keeps flashing (both amber).  Again, what (if anything) does this mean?  I opened up the unit and checked around and found no corrosion on any of the contacts (RAM, CD/DVD ROM, HDD or anywhere), and I'm at a loss as to how to correct this.

    Although having the photo of the main board probably will assist me when I open it up again to check those - IF I can get it open enough for that.

    Unfortunately the service guide does not show the meaning of the code so both power lights and the battery are blinking amber! However this may indicate some hardware or bios problem!

    could you solve the problem? i have the same laptop  and works fine, first of all, when battery light flashes amber is when the battery is close to 0% charge, but i think the problem is the voltage, the motherboard is not recieving the voltage it needs to boot, so HDD cannot boot, second is that this laptop is made for Windows Vista Home Basic and not for Home Premium, the difference is Aero, that is available to Home Premium but not for Home Basic, so try with Home basic, because Aero will make the laptop very slow
