So I've gotten my hands on a DX4870 - UM20P got it from a family member and was told the hard drive needs to be replaced, looking to upgrade to make it into a cheap little gaming computer, just getting my feet wet into building these I know it's pretty old, i can't find any specs on it to know what I can and can't use on this Gateway desktop so I'm hoping I can get some guidance, i just need to know what is the CPU socket type, how far I can go with an upgrade, i think it's a 1155 but I'm not 100% sure, what type of GPU is compatible with this desktop and also a power supply that'll work for this, if anyone can point me into the right direction that'll be great.

There were close to 20 different versions of the DX4870, here's the specs on one of them. It does use a LGA1155 socket for the motherboard, originally shipped with an Ivy Bridge or Sandy Bridge processor. It uses the B75 chipset and I believe supports overclocking with the K type processors. It should have four memory slots and supports 16GB of 1333/1600 memory. I think that many of the SKUs were either locale changes or video cards added. It's got an x16 slot for video. Only one of the SATA connectors supports 6GB/s, the other five are 3GB/s.

So any LGA1155 motherboard would be good or what can I upgrade it to? And ant PIC X16 GPU is compatible with it then?

You'll want to check out which CPU you have now and match an Ivy Bridge with an Ivy Bridge and a Sandy Bridge with a Sandy Bridge, just to be on the safe side. I don't want you getting a mismatch on the hope it'll work... :)

Any of the x16 GPU cards should work since you have a full size slot with room for double depth.
