Hi all, I have a Acer Predator 17 (Predator G9-793) -- Full spec'd and optioned

When playing games like World of Warcraft I am unable to raid or do any gaming where there is high populated areas because the game play starts to become glitchy, the graphics quality is there but the graphics is also lagging badly, to the point where I have to avoid raids all together. My FPS sits at 20-25 while standing around (Max graphic settings) and 25-30 FPS (Lowest graphic settings) My laptop is completely up to date as well. My brother has the exact same laptop, we can stand next to each other and i'll be getting 20 FPS while hes sitting on 60-70 FPS.
Can someone please help shed some light on this, its driving me insane.

Thanks,
Jack

Check the CPU & GPU temperature, it may be thermally throttling.  I have a G9-793 (7700HQ, GTX 1070, 32Gb) performance is not an issue, even with Witcher 3.

Run HWinfo64 in the background, you will be able to see min & max temp, and be able to log and average the temp for the session.

Check the background processes on yours?

Thanks for getting back to me Queen6, I ran that program and did a raid, during a raid boss fight my CPU was averaging 46.7 C with max of 51 C and the GPU was averaging 48 C with a max of 53 C. My fans don't spin any faster, assuming that it doesnt require it. I have also swapped out my  CD rom for the extra fan.  (FPS was at 5-10 during boss encounter)(25 players as well as the games NPC's)
I forgot to mention that the laptop experiences frequent crashes (screen freezes and becomes not responsive with my only option to hold down the power button and restart). In saying this, my laptop froze during typing this reply with World of Warcraft and HWinfo64 running in the background.

    Thanks,
    Jack

    Hi sri369,

I'm unsure what you mean, what do you recommend me check in the background processes?
    Thanks,
    Jack

In your windows services you could check what all services are there, and disable the ones you don't use or use rarely.
Two items you could disable are fetch service and windows search, unless them you use them both often.
Also things like vmware services could be set to manual mode. Various windows services like xbox services and such could be disabled, including windows store, unless you use windows store a lot.

Low FPS may be more related to the network connection as the CPU / GPU temperatures are low, although I don't play World of Warcraft I don't think it's an overly taxing game.  The WOW forums might be more helpful in that respect to help optimise the connection for the game, certainly with these temperatures neither the CPU or GPU is under any stress.

Turn off all the Windows Gaming options and all the Nvidia GeForce Experience stuff, however I don't think that's the issue here.  As your brothers notebook is identical I would also go through all the connection & graphic settings and driver versions as his is not dropping FPS.

    For the crashes:
Check you BIOS revision, better to be on 1.13 or 1.14 if unsure of the process to source and update the BIOS come back and one of us will help.  It's very straightforward, equally very damaging if not done correctly.

If you have an undervolt applied to the CPU, reduce it by 5mV or DL OCCT and run a 3-4 hour stability test with OCCT CPU using large dataset to reveal if any errors are occurring.

As mentioned I don't think WoW is very demanding yet with those temps it would suggest the CPU and GPU are not working very hard. Install MSI Afterburner and put the on screen overlay to show the percentage of CPU and GPU use during these slow downs. See where they are at. Could be a driver issue limiting frames? Did you so a safe mode driver uninstall and reinstall with current driver? Give it a go.

From what I have noticed generally CPU and GPU aren't at 100%. They normally are around 50-75 range. I would recommend checking where the game is installed.

My laptop came with a 512 GB SSD. I put in a 1 TB HDD from my old laptop. All my games were already installed on my HDD. After I put the HDD in this laptop, here is what I did.
    1. Partition the SSD into two parts - 100 GB for Windows, and rest for Games.
    2. Split my Steam games install folder to the new drive on SSD too.
    3. Moved my hardcore games like Witcher 3, Ghost Recond Wildlands and such to the SSD folder.
This helps with the disk read times too, and very noticeable in RUST.

Also, since my external monitor and this laptop too have a refresh rate of max 60, I normally set the FPS to 60, and at times turn on vsync too. This reduces stress on CPU and GPU by avoiding calculate all those over 60 frames, and helps run them cooler too.

Also here are some Windows services that I disabled:
    Superfetch
    Search
    Cortana
Windows Store (disabled from working in background)

Other services like those for VMWare and such I set on manual so i can turn them on as needed, when needed.

I run WoW on a Pred 15 (1060 version) and I'm getting 60 fps (1080p) in non-raids at the 10 setting (fully maxed) and roughly 45-55 in raids (Argus, Coven with all the spell effects from fire adds etc).  I had issues like yours prior to finding out that a bunch of thermal throttling features for the CPU were by default turned on.  I use Throttlestop to undervolt my CPU and turned off all the options except for SpeedStep:  BD Prochot (the biggest villain, this is NOT the same as regular PROCHOT which your CPU will always have enabled to throttle down before hitting a fatal temp) and C1E.

You might want to see if this is your problem.  Prior to turning off those features, I was getting 40-55 frames in Dalaran etc at WoW setting of 5, and dipping to 25-30 fps in raids!  Huge difference as you can see when they were turned off.  My temps don't go over 58C for GPU and 56C for CPU in WoW but I am undervolted so you will want to monitor your temps closely at first to make sure it's not a matter of overheating.

Also make sure your windows is fully updated. I had a ton of issues before the latest Windows update .
