I have an older tablet but have never had this problem. I connect to my wifi. It says "connected". Then within a few seconds, it disconnects and reconnects. After this, I get the message, "Authentication problem". I called AT&T but no help. In desperation, I did a factory reset. No help either. Please help if you can.
Thank you very much!

Please try the below mentioned steps :
Go to Settings, and under the Network, connections tap on Wi-Fi.
Here you will find the network, which you want to connect so long press on the network’s name or SSID.
You must have got a popup menu with two options, select Forget network option.
Now try to reconnect the same network by re-entering Password. The above should solve the problem and you will be able to get connected.

If issue persists, then try this step.
Go to Settings and select the WiFi network you want to use, just like above.
Long press and hold on the network’s name and choose ‘Modify network’ option this time from the popup menu you receive.
Check the box next to ‘Show advanced options’ and seek for IP settings.
Change from DHCP to Static, and you will find IP Address field below.
Note down information in the static IP address field and then delete it.
Re-enter the details you deleted in above step and hit ‘Save.’

Now connect and report back your status, good luck!

Well, I have to tell you I am NOT a "tech" type of person. But I just tried to connect to wifi without trying any of the steps you have given...and for whatever reason, it now connects. I still said your suggestions worked because I very much appreciate the fact that you took your time to write and offer help! If I have problems again, I can come back to the steps you gave and try to see if they work. Again, THANK YOU for your time and advice!!

OK. So, now after days of NO problems whatsoever connecting to wifi, I suddenly cannot without the problems as stated above. I tried both of the solutions you gave and neither has worked. Can you please suggest anything else? What would have been the reason for NOT having to use either of the solutions days ago, and the wifi suddenly connecting, and then just as suddenly, again connecting and disconnecting?

Can you please check the tablet by connecting to any other network so that we can isolate whether the issue is with tablet or network router settings?

Yes. It will have to be next week, though. Without going into the details, at that point I will have access to another network, and can try connecting to it. I know this sounds weird, but it is the only other private network I have access to. I do not trust ANY public network. I will let you know what I find out.
Thank you so much for your time! I have nowhere else to turn for help....

If you have a Cellular phone that allows Tethering or WiFi Hotspot, you could try connecting through that device.
Many cellular carriers don't like you doing this, but if you can just try it for a few minutes, you should be ok.
This will allow you to check if your router is a problem, or your tablet.
