Try to open it and see if there is dust acumulated in between fan and heathsinc.  That is the most common issue with laptops. HTH

this is a common issue with all notebooks after a while the unit will build up a fair amount of dust/fabrics and will build up around the fans and cause the unit to heat more than normal. the best thing to do is to get some can air and clean it out if the issue remains or the unit is Auto powering off due to this issue i would contact support if the unit is under warranty.

When does the laptop get hot? Sometimes my husbands laptop gets hot when he is playing a certian game, but stays cool otherwise. Is it something like that, or is it just getting unusually warm when sitting on a table turned on?

First, IF THE NOTEBOOK IS UNDER WARRANTY, DO NOTHING TO THE NOTEBOOK! CALL ACER TECH SUPPORT. You could also try blowing canned air into the cooling vents on the notebook. these are usually located on the bottom(intake) and on one of the sides(exhaust). Do make sure the unit is off, unplugged and battery removed! canned air is flamable! Also make sure you hold the can upright at all times while doing this! if the can is held sideways or upside down, liquid will come out that could damage the unit!  if it is just dust, removing the unit and thoroughly cleaning it is the best solution. most fans are not easily accessible though. If the fan is damaged or failing, you will usually hear a clicking or buzzing sound from the fan. if it HAS failed, you will hear nothing. in these cases i would have the cooling unit replaced as soon as possible! Remember, heat is the enemy of all laptops. Running your notebook hot will severely shorten the lifespan of the unit! Good Luck!
