A500 Won't Boot Past Acer Screen

This seems to be a common thread but I haven't found any solution that actually works.

A500 running ICS retrieved via OTA updates, never rooted, and out of warranty.  Attempt a normal boot-up and it hangs on the Acer screen.

Reset attempted using the volume up and screen lock switch which indicates that it is Erasing User Data... Erasing Cache... then it reboots again.  If buttons continued, it keeps cycling through same process.  If buttons released, it goes back to the Acer screen.

Starting with volume down gets to Booting Recovery Kernal Image... and standing Android which stands then drops to horizontal Android with red triangle & exclamation point.

Is there an Update.zip or image file to put on the micro-SD that would allow recovery of this device?

I also read about an APX mode which it will enter by booting with the reset button.  Are there any restore options in this mode?

Looking for ideas and options.

The knowledge base common questions topic is not always alot of help here either.

    http://community.acer.com/t5/Community-KB/My-Android-tablet-will-not-boot/ta-p/48781

The first link talks about doing a reset from within the software.  This isn't possible if the tablet won't boot.

The second link has apparently worked for some but not for others so it is potentially useful.

The "2. Contact your local Acer service center to inquire about setting your tablet up for repair." is not much help since the search function for finding a service center in the U.S. brings up one location with only a snail mail address (no Email or phone for inquiring about setting your tablet up for repair or finding out potential costs or instructions on how to submit it when out of warranty).
