Hello

Last night my laptop installed a Windows 8 update that made it go to the 'black screen of death'. After several attempts to get it fixed I finally think I got the whole Windows wiped up and now when booting I only get this message:

Computer needs to be fixed

The operating system couldn't be loaded because the system registry file is missing or contains errors

File:\-windows\system32\config\system
Error code: 0xc000000f

I think that my only option is to get a new Windows operating system to a flash drive and install the whole thing through BIOS when I boot the computer? As an Acer user that used to own Windows 8, is there any chance that I will get the Windows for free or do I have to purchase it? Also I could use the instructions on how I specifically boot through the flash drive in the BIOS. I guess that there isn't any chance for me to save any of my files anymore.

Thank you in advance.

had you try to press Alt+F10 keys at boot to start recovery?
    or
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows8
you can create a windows 8 installation media downloading the tool from Microsoft, it will recognise the product key stored on BIOS.

Yeah I tried basically everything I could find through Google last night. I cannot get to the recovery anymore as that message is the only thing I can get to along with accessing the BIOS with F2.

The link might be helpful, will try that when I get back home. Thank you a lot.

Yes and I am currently downloading the Windows 8.1 to a flash drive. I don't know where to locate my Windows Product key though and not sure how to install it from the drive.

as i told you, the product key is stored on BIOS and it will be read automatically during the installation or at first data connection.

if the USB flash drive will be not recognised, try these steps:
    1) download a windows 8 iso using Microsoft
    2) download Rufus:
plug your USB flash drive, run Rufus then:
select ISO image from the dropdown menu near "Create a bootable disk"
click on the little icon on the right and browse to the windows downloaded iso file
as  Partitions scheme select "GPT partition scheme for UEFI"
    as File system select "FAT32"
    click on Start
wait until it finish, then uplug your USB flash drive
    3) backup all your personal data *
    4) Reboot to BIOS, pressing F2 at boot if it's a laptop or Del key if it's a desktop, then press F9 to load default and F10 to save and exit
    5) plug your USB flash drive and at boot press F12 (if F12 doesn't work, see if it auto-recognise the USB flash drive or press F2 or Del key to enter BIOS and enable F12 boot menu under BOOT tab), choose the USB flash drive as bootable device

The installing process went through without problems but in the control panel the it tells me to activate Windows and when I reboot I now seem to have to operating systems which both are Windows 8.1 but the other one seems to be the non working one that I cannot use and with the second one it's asking me to activate and doesn't allow me to use WiFi for example so I cannot do anything.

ok, so it's better if you re-install windows again wiping your HDD/SSD completly.
boot again from the USB flash drive and choose to do a custom installation, then in the screen where you choose the installation drive, delete any partition visible, until you have a single unallocated space; then select it and let windows install.

    if you need drivers:

Can you give instructions on how to do this? Last night I wiped everything off by resetting the computer but after installing it still shows two Windows 8.1's in volume 4 and they are both working the same: need activation. How can I wipe both of these away and then reinstall the whole computer?

once at language/keyboard selection, press shift+F10, a command prompt will open
     type
    Diskpart
    list disk
select disk x (x is the number of your HDD)
    clean
    exit
exit again to close command prompt
    proceed with windows 10 installation

I got it activated through phone but the new problem is that there isn't a WiFi connection available. It only shows me ethernet and VPN as options so I cannot connect to my WiFi.

oh it depends on your laptop...
if you want to be sure follow these steps under network adapters:

    Windows logo key + x
    click on Device manager

if Yellow exclamation mark is present
    double click on it
    choose "Details" tab
    from dropdown menu, select HardwareIDs
click on the first value and copy/paste it here
