My 2 year old Aspire E 15 laptop running Windows 10 was recently displaying the blue screen with the message SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED upon boot-up, and after 100% complete would reboot.  Called support and had them send me the USB System Recovery Drive.  Restored it, but now it just sits at the screen at 0% complete and the fan goes on and off.  Ran DBAN with autonuke, restored it, same thing.  Anyone???

    Hi
    JRoman
Blue screens (BSOD) is mostly occur due to hardware and sometimes due to incompatible software.  In a lot of cases it is a corrupted driver or a driver conflict.  The most common causes of blue screens are overheating, faulty RAM, video card problem and BIOS.

If you restart it continuously at this screen 3 times or so it should go into automatic repair. Once this fails, it should offer a screen which has advanced options or troubleshooting on it.
You are asked to choose an option on how to continue. Choose Troubleshoot >  choose advanced  > choose command prompt.

     open command prompt as admin
    x:\windows\system32>c:

    c:\>cd windows\systems32\drivers
        >ren etd.sys etd.sys.old
        >exit
        restart pc.

Hi Sharanji.  I tried powering on/off, but it didn't do anything different, so hit F8 a few times, and finally got in!  Selected Safe mode, and the install started.  I assumed when the files downloaded off the erecovery USB, that the install had already occurred, but I guess not.  We're back to Windows 8.1, but I now have another issue.  Can't connect to wifi.  When we go to Network Connections, only Ethernet and VPN are options.  Wireless does not appear.

Can you check if Airplane mode is enabled? Also check if you've the wireless driver installed. Also is your WiFi detecting on other devices and make sure this machine is where you're unable to connect.

Airplane mode is Off.  My phone is working fine, which is next to my laptop.  How can I check if the wireless driver is installed?

Well, you can try Windows + R (Run command) and in that, type devmgmt.msc and you'll have a Network Adapters tab. In that, see if you've a wireless driver installed. If the Wireless Driver is not installed, you'll have something similar (Yellow color exclamation mark). Below is an example m8.

All that we see under Network adapters is 2 Bluetooth Devices and Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller.

Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller is the Wireless controller from RealTek. Is there any exclamation next to it? If not, right click uninstall the driver. Then re-install the driver. Probably after the restart, the issue will be fixed.

    How do you reinstall?

Right click Network Adapters, click scan for hardware changes. The same device will now appear driverless. You need to install the driver for this by either Googling for the correct driver, if not look for hardware ID. One more thing, if you restart the computer, it will install from your Windows update anyway but that will probably install the troublesome driver.

Perhaps post a screenshot or something here so I can look for the driver for you or you can find the hardware ID.

    1. Open the Device Manager from the Control Panel. You can also type "devmgmt.msc" at the Run option in the Start menu.
    2. In the Device Manager, right-click the device, and select Properties in the popup menu.
    3. Select the Details tab.
    4. Select the Hardware Ids in the dropdown list.

The first 2 are a little different:

    SUBSYS_09051025&REV_12
    SUBSYS_09051025

selected each one individually, hit OK, rebooted.  Same issue.

Under Other devices, everything has a yellow exclamation point, including Network Controller.

OK, I downloaded and installed the Qualcomm Atheros AR956x Wireless Network Adapter driver, and SUCCESS!  Why was this not included on my erecovery USB?

Glad that the issue is resolved. I appreciate all your efforts in fixing the problem.
The network device driver issue was corrupted or not installed correctly.
Thanks to RanY2J for continuing the thread and resolving the issue.

One last question, do I need the product key if I want to upgrade to Windows 10?  If so, where do I find it.

When you perform a clean installation of Windows 10 on a system that has had Windows 7 or 8.1 installed, the installation may ask for your product key.
Acer cannot provide you with this product key. The product key is built-in into your computer hardware, and not separately available.

The product key is built-in into your computer hardware, and not separately available.

You need to restore your original version of Windows shipped with your computer, then you can upgrade your operating system to Windows 10 and activate Windows 10 online. This will update the product key to be compatible with Windows 10.

After these steps have been completed, you can perform a clean installation of Windows 10 and will not have to enter a product key.

Please start a new thread for other issues.

The original version was directly installed on my computer.  I did not received any disks.  I restored using the erecovery USB.  So am I good to upgrade Windows?
