So i opened up my Acer Aspire U5 to do routine cleaning of the fan and heat sink. Along with clearing the dust from the case. What i noticed was on the mainboard there is a unused slot. I am asking if it was Mini PCIE or a M.2 slot and if its either can a new SSD be installed?

I see but is it usable by a SSD? Or perhaps a external graphics xard?

Acer support service...maybe but if you are out of warranty period, calling them will cost you money.

maybe you can try something like HWinfo and check if the port is listed under "motherboard-SMBIOS - system ports"
    https://www.hwinfo.com/download.php
    download the portable version

Were you able to find an answer on this?

I'm trying to find a way to hook up a second display, and since the system has no VGA port I'm having no luck. If this is a PCIe port of some kind, perhaps there's still hope?

The HWinfo program linked above reports that there is an empty PCIe x1 short slot. I wonder if that's the one you found? If so, I wonder if there's a way to throw a small vga card in there and somehow route the cable out? (I don't need much in the way of specs on that second display.)

You have an HDMI out port don't you? If you want a second monitor that should run it.

@Daanb you will be much more likely to get an answer if you start a new thread instead of camping on this one from 2018. Include your full model number and what you are trying to do. We should be able to help you out there...
