I brought the acer aspire 5 a515-51g with i5 - 8th generation and Mx150. It was told this processor can work upto 3.4ghz in turbo boost but mine works at 1.6ghz maximum i have used CPU-Z software to check this and also in my pc properties it is given as 1.6ghz max 1.8ghz. What am I missing here?

  • Hi,
Go to Power Options and check whether it's in Balanced plan, if it is, switch to Higher performance plan, right click battery icon, click Power Options and change it in the next window.

    Hi,
Could you please post the model name of your CPU.

    The problem is the same!

    model: A515-51G-51Y2
    cpu: i5-8250U

On battery and only one intensive process is running the core clock is 1.6GHz!
I think this behaviour make this laptop more slower than 10years older laptops on single thread performance!!!
Please give me a solution! I have possibility to return this laptop to the seller, and I will do!
    :(

Here's a solution. Boot your laptop, put it to sleep , press any button to boot it back up and you'll have boost frequency.

Base frequency for i5-8250u is 1.6Ghz so mostly it works on this frequency.
This processor is designed so as to consume less power than older generations.
Therefore clock frequency jumps to max 3.4Ghz using turbo boost only when laptop is plugged in as it consumes more power.

Note:It is advised that you plug in your laptop to AC power when you run CPU intensive tasks.
CPU won't work at 3.4Ghz clock speed continuously.Turbo boosts work only for a few seconds with short intervals.
    Hope that helped you.

I think the most advantage of the "turbo boost" is that when only one intensive task is running (only one core is used) it is run at maximum speed! In this case the power consumption is little. I think this do the processor itself when "turbo boost" is enabled. But exactly that is disabled by ASUS!
On windows the assus's drivers enable the "turbo boost" when the laptop is externaly powered! But on linux there is a big problem! If the laptop is turn on when it is on the battery, the plugging of the power cable do not enable the "turbo boost"!!! The "turbo boost" is disabled forever!!! This is happen with the factory installed "endless linux" too!!!!!!!!

first of all keep your windows up-to date. if that doesn't fix it. use real temp app to untick the disable turbo option in its setting.

Same issue but noticed that the cpu is really hard thermal throttling during intensive workload so it steps down the frequency very bad - trying to put liquid metal in and test a bit ^^
